Ally McCoist Names Premier League Dark Horses to Challenge Arsenal

Former Scotland striker Ally McCoist has identified potential contenders who could rival Arsenal for the Premier League title in the upcoming season. While acknowledging Arsenal’s strong position following their recent championship win, McCoist highlighted Chelsea as a team to watch, particularly due to their managerial appointment and key signings.

Arsenal’s Position as Favorites

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal secured their first league title in 22 years last season, ending a two-decade drought. After finishing as runners-up for three consecutive seasons, the Gunners are now preparing to defend their crown. The club has been active in the transfer market, with arrivals like Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge and Illan Meslier from Leeds United. A significant reported deal for Bruno Guimaraes is also nearing completion, with further speculation surrounding a potential move for Vinicius Junior from Real Madrid.

Despite potential incomings and the inherent challenges of defending a title, McCoist still considers Arsenal the team to beat as the new campaign approaches. “Arsenal, I think at this moment in time would be my favourites, just, at the start of the tournament,” he stated. He also noted that teams like Liverpool and Manchester United are expected to show improvement, with Manchester United also needing to contend with European fixtures. The form of Rodri for Manchester City, whom McCoist described as “massive, outstanding” and “vital” at the World Cup, was also mentioned as a key factor for their rivals.

However, McCoist cautioned that Arsenal are not guaranteed to retain their title, emphasizing the difficulty of defending a league championship. “We’ve known how difficult it is to defend the league title, but I just think Arsenal, there’s no way they’re certainties, but I would probably have them just starting as favourites,” he added.

Chelsea: The Emerging Dark Horse

McCoist expressed particular excitement about Chelsea’s prospects under new manager Xabi Alonso. The former Liverpool midfielder has taken the helm at Stamford Bridge, and the club has reportedly invested significantly in the squad. Notable acquisitions include Morgan Rogers from Arsenal for a substantial fee, and experienced players Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck, who have joined from Brentford and Brighton, respectively.

The addition of Henderson and Welbeck is seen by McCoist as a crucial move to instill leadership and experience within a Chelsea squad that has sometimes been criticized for lacking direction and cohesion. “I’m very excited. I think the manager [Xabi Alonso] is a clever, clever move,” McCoist commented on Chelsea’s strategy. “What is important, as much as anything, is what goes on in the dressing room before training, after training, all that kind of stuff.”

McCoist believes that the signings of Henderson and Welbeck will bring much-needed respect and guidance to the dressing room. “But those two signings, Henderson and Welbeck, they get right into that dressing room and one thing they get is respect, you know. And they’ll be able to see and monitor things.” He anticipates that this infusion of experience, combined with Alonso’s tactical acumen, could make Chelsea a formidable opponent.

Chelsea’s Potential Impact Players

  • Jordan Henderson: Bringing vast experience from his time at Liverpool and captaining England, Henderson is expected to provide leadership and a winning mentality.
  • Danny Welbeck: A Premier League veteran, Welbeck offers valuable experience and a proven ability to perform at the highest level, adding depth and know-how.
  • Morgan Rogers: While a younger acquisition, his significant transfer fee suggests high expectations for his contribution to the attacking lineup.

“I’m really interested to see how Chelsea start the season. I think they could be one to watch; they’ve obviously got some real quality players. Of course they have,” McCoist concluded. “And I just think with a bit of togetherness, a bit of direction, I like the manager, and I think it’s a shrewd move bringing those two in.”

Conclusion

As the Premier League season looms, Ally McCoist’s analysis points to Arsenal as the initial favorites to defend their title. However, he strongly advocates for Chelsea as a significant dark horse, whose strategic signings and new management could pose a serious challenge. The blend of experience and new talent under Xabi Alonso makes Chelsea a team that other Premier League clubs will be closely monitoring.
