Blood Message: A Cinematic Action Game Rivaling The Last of Us?
SHARE

A new cinematic action game, tentatively titled Blood Message, is emerging as a potential contender for fans of narrative-driven experiences like The Last of Us. Early hands-on impressions from Summer Game Fest 2026 suggest a compelling blend of stealth, intense melee combat, and dramatic set-piece moments, all set against the backdrop of Ancient China. This title, developed by 24 Entertainment, the studio behind Naraka: Bladepoint, marks their first foray into single-player game development.

An Epic Journey Through Ancient China

Blood Message immerses players in a perilous 1,000-mile journey across the arid landscapes of East Asia. Players will guide a nameless hero and his son as they race against time to deliver a crucial message to the historical city of Chang’an. The narrative promises a struggle for survival against formidable odds, including navigating vast sieges and evading relentless enemy forces. The game’s setting in Ancient China, particularly its less-explored desert regions, offers a unique and visually striking environment.

The demo provided a glimpse into the game’s opening moments. Players find the protagonist searching a house for an important letter while hostile soldiers patrol the surrounding town. The presentation immediately highlights high production values, with detailed environments and numerous interactive objects. The architectural style, featuring clay walls, sandy floors, and thatched roofs, contributes to the game’s distinctive aesthetic, evoking a sense of exoticism rarely depicted in gaming.

Fluid Combat and Environmental Interaction

Utilizing a DualSense Wireless Controller, the game’s movement mechanics were noted for their fluidity and impressive, realistic animations, drawing comparisons to the cinematic quality seen in The Last of Us Part 2. Crucially, these animations do not compromise responsiveness, ensuring a smooth player experience.

Combat encounters are described as excellent, featuring a familiar yet polished system of light and heavy attacks, alongside a parry mechanic. What elevates the combat, according to early impressions, is the protagonist’s slick interaction with the environment. Attacks have a tangible impact, causing enemies to stagger and react realistically. For instance, striking an enemy near a stacked shelf can send them tumbling into it, stunning them and creating tactical opportunities. Similarly, pushing an opponent into a table can create much-needed distance when outnumbered.

The game also incorporates a consequence system for failed defenses. If a player fails to deflect an incoming strike, they may be forced to the ground, requiring them to quickly find and use nearby heavy objects to create an escape window. Despite limited combat time in the demo, the variety in how fights can unfold, especially with an allied companion present, was impressive. The inclusion of scripted moments, such as dual-wielding enemies engaging the player simultaneously to trigger climactic struggles, adds an element of surprise and excitement, enhancing the overall cinematic feel.

Robust Stealth and Dynamic Set Pieces

Beyond direct confrontation, Blood Message offers a robust stealth system, making combat largely optional. Players are encouraged to utilize cover, such as long grass and environmental objects, to evade enemy patrols, reminiscent of the stealth mechanics in The Last of Us Part 2. Undetected takedowns are possible, but a single misstep can quickly escalate into open combat.

When stealth fails or is not an option, the game transitions into bombastic chase sequences. These moments involve intense action, such as sprinting from barrages of arrows, scrambling up ledges, and leaping across perilous gaps. While the primary path is often intuitive, the inclusion of alternative routes offers opportunities for exploration and experimentation.

Potential for a New Gaming Favorite

The overall impression of Blood Message is that its quality and execution could rival that of established developers like Naughty Dog. With plans for release on both consoles and PC, this upcoming title is positioned to be a highly anticipated addition to the libraries of gamers seeking deep, narrative-driven action experiences with high production values and engaging gameplay mechanics.

The game’s focus on a compelling story, detailed world-building, fluid combat, and strategic stealth suggests it could carve out a significant niche in the action-adventure genre.
