UK Warned of Russian Retaliation Over Ukraine Missile Support

Britain faces a heightened risk of Russian retaliation following its decision to provide Ukraine with blueprints for long-range missiles, according to security experts. The move, which allows Kyiv to potentially manufacture its own advanced weaponry, has prompted warnings of potential “grey zone attacks” and other hostile actions from Russia.

Experts Sound Alarm on Russian Response

Former defence minister Tobias Ellwood stated that Russia, under Vladimir Putin, is likely to “seek to exact a price” for the UK’s significant escalation in military support for Ukraine. He anticipates an increase in “grey zone attacks” – covert or deniable hostile actions that fall below the threshold of conventional warfare. Ellwood warned that Britain’s homeland defences against such tactics are “woefully out of date” and that the nation will soon become acutely aware of this vulnerability.

Echoing these concerns, Bob Seely, a former Conservative MP and author, suggested that Russia’s strategy may involve employing individuals within the UK and Europe to carry out acts of sabotage or vandalism rather than direct military strikes. “This threat fits into a wider pattern where Russia won’t seek to strike directly or strike militarily in a conventional military sense, but will see to find individuals in the UK and Europe to conduct basic sabotage or vandalism,” Seely explained. He added that such actions could target UK-linked sites or individuals both in Ukraine and potentially on British soil, indicating a potential escalation with an increasing threshold for dangerous acts by Putin.

Kremlin Adviser Hints at “Semi-Military” Action

The warnings gained traction following comments from Andrei Fedorov, an adviser to the Kremlin, who did not “100% exclude” the possibility of “semi-military” action against Britain. Fedorov suggested that factories producing drones for Ukraine could become targets, potentially attacked by “unknown sources” rather than directly by Russian state actors. He told BBC Newsnight that a “visible reaction from Russia towards the UK” could occur, encompassing “technical reactions” like cyber-attacks from unspecified origins, political measures, or even “semi-military” actions.

When pressed to elaborate on what “semi-military” might entail, Fedorov pointed to potential disruptions at enterprises or factories involved in supplying Ukraine. He specifically mentioned factories producing drones, implying that such facilities could face attacks, though he stressed these would not be officially attributed to Russia but rather to “unknown sources.”

Political Reactions and Defence Spending Calls

The Conservative Party seized upon these threats to reiterate their call for increased defence spending. Shadow defence secretary James Cartlidge condemned Russia’s threats and affirmed continued support for Ukraine. However, he argued that the best deterrent against aggression is preparedness, urging the new Prime Minister to commit to raising defence spending to 3% of GDP by 2029. “While we should be wary of responding to Russian propaganda, the best way to deter aggression is to be prepared for it,” Cartlidge stated.

The UK’s plan to share long-range missile blueprints with Ukraine also drew criticism from Moscow. Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for Vladimir Putin, stated that the move would “add fuel to the fire” of the conflict, accusing Britain of being “involved in this war on the side of the Kyiv regime.”

Prime Minister’s Stance and Ukraine’s Needs

Responding to these accusations during his visit to Ukraine, Prime Minister Andy Burnham questioned the origin of the conflict, asking, “Who started the fire?” He reaffirmed that there would be “no change in the UK’s steadfast support” for Kyiv. Mr. Burnham met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and is expected to join other European leaders in advocating for continued US support for Ukraine at an upcoming meeting in New York.

The UK’s assistance includes providing blueprints for British components used in the French-produced Scalp missile, a variant of the British Storm Shadow. This collaboration aims to enable Ukraine to produce these advanced weapons domestically, potentially allowing them to strike targets deeper within Russian territory. In return, Ukraine has shared significant battlefield data with Britain, including access to its “Avengers” AI database, as part of a joint effort to develop AI-driven national security solutions.

During his visit, Mr. Burnham also highlighted Ukraine’s urgent need for more interceptor missiles to counter Russia’s intensified bombardment, particularly as Kyiv faces dwindling supplies. The ongoing support and technological cooperation underscore the deepening strategic partnership between the UK and Ukraine in the face of sustained Russian aggression.
