The Los Angeles Chargers are releasing veteran guard Mekhi Becton, a Super Bowl LIX champion, less than a year after he signed a two-year, $20 million contract with the team.
Becton’s Path to the NFL
Becton, known as ‘Big Ticket’ for his imposing 6-foot-7, 363-pound frame, entered the league as the 11th overall pick by the New York Jets in 2020 following a standout college career at Louisville. Over his NFL tenure, the 26-year-old has started 59 games but now seeks his third team in three consecutive seasons.
Super Bowl Glory with Eagles
After battling injuries with the Jets through the 2023 season, Becton joined the Philadelphia Eagles on a one-year deal in April 2024. He started 19 games, including the regular season and playoffs, anchoring the line in Super Bowl LIX against the Kansas City Chiefs in New Orleans, where Philadelphia secured the victory.
Short Stint in Los Angeles Ends
Becton started 14 games for the Chargers last season, but injuries and performance issues marred his 2025 campaign. The release frees up $9.7 million in salary cap space, allowing Los Angeles to bolster its roster for 2026.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh plans to overhaul the Chargers’ interior offensive line this offseason, signaling a shift in team strategy.
