Charlie Woods Misses US Amateur Cut Amid Challenging Season

Charlie Woods, the 17-year-old son of golf legend Tiger Woods, faced another hurdle in his burgeoning golf career this week, failing to qualify for the prestigious US Amateur Championship. The event, a premier annual competition for amateur golfers in the United States, saw Woods miss the mark at the qualifying round held at Ohio State University’s Scarlet Course.

US Amateur Qualifying Setback

Competing in a bid to secure his spot in the championship field, Woods carded a five-over-par 76. This score placed him six shots behind the final qualifying positions, according to reports from Golf Digest. The qualifying event at the Scarlet Course produced 13 players who earned direct entry and two alternates for the tournament.

Woods, who has committed to play collegiate golf at Florida State University upon graduating high school next year, now shifts his attention to the upcoming US Junior Amateur Championship. This tournament is scheduled to take place later this month at Saucon Valley.

A Season of Ups and Downs

This latest result marks another challenging moment in what has been a difficult season for Charlie Woods as he strives to emulate his father’s storied career. He has participated in seven officially ranked events this season, with his best performance being a 19th-place finish at the Junior Orange Bowl International in January. Beyond this single top-20 showing, Woods has not secured another finish within the top 25 in his other starts this year.

Recent Tournament Performances

  • North & South Men’s Amateur: Earlier in the month, Woods missed the cut at the North & South Men’s Amateur, held at the renowned Pinehurst No. 2 and No. 4 courses in North Carolina. He finished at 7-over par across the 36 holes, hovering near the cut line before ultimately falling short.
  • Team TaylorMade Invitational: In May, Woods finished 28th at the Team TaylorMade Invitational. This event held particular significance as he had won it the previous year.

Comparing Early Careers

The trajectory of Charlie Woods’ early career is often contrasted with that of his father, Tiger Woods. By the same age, Tiger Woods had already established a remarkable record, including winning an unprecedented three consecutive US Junior Amateur titles and three consecutive U.S. Amateur championships. His first U.S. Amateur victory came in 1994 when he was 18 years old.

Significant NIL Valuation Amidst Performance

Despite the recent on-course struggles, Charlie Woods reportedly holds a substantial Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) valuation. According to The Caddie Network’s latest Collegiate Golf NIL market values, his valuation is estimated at $3 million. This figure reportedly represents the highest NIL valuation for a golfer since these rankings were introduced in 2024.

The report attributes this high valuation not to current tournament results, but to Woods’ considerable star power and his significant social media following, which numbers 164,000. This commercial appeal remains strong even as he navigates a challenging period in his competitive season.

NIL Landscape and Other Top Prospects

Interestingly, the NIL valuation list places Charlie Woods at the top, closely followed by Kai Trump, the granddaughter of the former President. Trump boasts three million followers on Instagram and holds an estimated NIL valuation of $2.25 million, ranking second. Vanessa Trump, Kai’s mother, is reportedly dating Charlie Woods’ father, highlighting a connection between the two families prominent in the NIL rankings.

In third place on the list is Miles Russell, who is set to become Charlie Woods’ future teammate at Florida State University. Russell’s NIL valuation is estimated at $1 million. Notably, Russell holds the No. 1 ranking in the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) and is ranked fifth in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, indicating a different dynamic where high amateur rankings are paired with a substantial, though lower than Woods, NIL valuation.

Looking Ahead

As Charlie Woods continues his development in the sport, the focus remains on his performance in upcoming events like the US Junior Amateur Championship. Balancing competitive aspirations with his significant commercial profile presents a unique path as he aims to build a successful career in professional golf, following in the footsteps of his legendary father.
