A 21-year-old man from Waterford West has been charged with a total of 95 offences related to child exploitation material, following an extensive investigation by detectives from the Townsville Child Abuse and Sexual Crimes Unit (CASCU). The charges include allegations of distributing, soliciting, and possessing material depicting the sexual exploitation and abuse of children.
Investigation into Online Distribution Activity
The investigation commenced due to ongoing inquiries into online distribution activities. Detectives allege that the 21-year-old man was connected to multiple online accounts and utilized encrypted communications across various digital platforms. This sophisticated use of technology to allegedly engage in illicit activities prompted a significant law enforcement response.
Search Warrant and Initial Charges
On July 23, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at a residence on Muchow Road in Waterford West. During the search, the 21-year-old man was located, and several digital devices were seized for forensic examination. At that time, the man was initially charged with 17 offences and has remained in custody since the arrest.
Forensic Examination and Additional Charges
Subsequent to the seizure, a thorough forensic examination of the digital devices was conducted. This detailed analysis uncovered further alleged offending, including extensive online communications and the possession and distribution of child exploitation material. As a result of these findings, an additional 78 charges were laid against the man on August 22, significantly increasing the total number of charges to 95.
Breakdown of Charges
The 95 charges encompass a range of serious offences. Specifically, the 21-year-old Waterford West resident faces:
- 21 counts of soliciting child abuse material by using a carriage service.
- 55 counts of distributing child exploitation material using a hidden network or anonymising service.
- 1 count of possessing child exploitation material using a hidden network or anonymising service.
- 1 count of possessing tainted property.
- The original 17 offences laid on July 23.
These charges highlight the alleged depth and breadth of the man’s involvement in the online distribution and possession of abhorrent material.
Related Arrest at the Residence
During the execution of the search warrant at the Waterford West address, a woman who was present was also arrested. She has since been charged with a number of drug trafficking offences, indicating a separate but concurrent law enforcement action at the location.

The 21-year-old man remains in custody and is scheduled to reappear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on October 16. The legal process is ongoing, with further court appearances anticipated as the case progresses.

“Child exploitation material causes significant and lasting harm to children, and those who produce, distribute or access this material should understand that police will continue to pursue them, regardless of the platforms or technology they use,” Detective Senior Sergeant Miles said. “This investigation demonstrates the commitment of specialist investigators to identifying people involved in this offending, gathering evidence and taking action to protect children from further harm.”
