Strong El Niño Fuels Global Warming, UN and Scientists Warn

A powerful El Niño event, already demonstrating unprecedented intensity in its early stages, is poised to exacerbate global weather extremes, according to warnings from United Nations officials and climate scientists. This natural warming phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean is expected to amplify the effects of a planet already grappling with rising temperatures, creating a dangerous synergy that could lead to more severe heatwaves, droughts, and heavy rainfall worldwide. The situation is being described as adding “fuel to a planet already on fire.”

El Niño Intensifies Amidst Record Heat

Scientists monitoring a key region of the Pacific Ocean, used as an indicator for El Niño’s strength, have recorded its warmest and most intense level ever for the 15th consecutive week since its formation. This intensity is particularly concerning because it has occurred early in the El Niño’s lifecycle. The phenomenon, characterized by a natural warming of surface waters near the equator, significantly disrupts global weather patterns. Projections indicate that this El Niño will not reach its peak for several more months and is expected to persist through the spring of 2027.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, issued a stark warning on Friday. The organization anticipates that the strengthening El Niño will likely trigger extreme heat, prolonged droughts, and intense rainfall events well into the coming year. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres articulated the urgency of the situation, stating, “Two months ago, I warned that El Nino was arriving on our doorstep. Now it is inside the house — and turning up the heat.”

Guterres highlighted the extreme weather events already experienced, including record-breaking heat domes and devastating wildfires in various parts of the world. He cautioned that these events are merely a prelude to what is to come as the El Niño strengthens. “According to the latest science, this is only a warm-up act,” Guterres remarked, emphasizing that the intensifying El Niño will act as an accelerant on an already warming planet. He concluded, “We are in uncharted territory. The climate crisis is in overdrive.”

Anticipating Chaotic Weather Extremes

While most computer forecast models suggest this El Niño could potentially break all-time intensity records when it peaks, likely in late fall, scientists acknowledge that this outcome is not guaranteed. Nevertheless, the consensus
