Embassy Studios: NYC’s Luxury Creative Hub Redefining Collaboration
SHARE

New York City’s vibrant music scene has a new, high-end destination with the opening of Embassy Studios. More than just a collection of recording rooms, Embassy aims to be a comprehensive creative campus designed to foster collaboration among artists, producers, engineers, and writers. While not an affordable alternative to bedroom studios, the facility offers an unparalleled luxury experience, emphasizing in-person interaction and a ‘record anywhere’ philosophy, all equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

A World-Class Creative Destination in the Heart of NYC

Frank Babar, the visionary behind Embassy Studios, sought to create a unique workspace that transcends the traditional recording studio model. “The vision behind the Embassy was to create a dynamic, world-class creative destination,” explained the Embassy team. “New York has always been a global centre for music, culture, and storytelling but we saw an opportunity to build something that went beyond the traditional recording studio. We wanted to create an environment that delivers exceptional sound and recording capabilities while also inspiring collaboration, innovation, and community.”

The studio boasts an extravagant level of luxury, evident in its impressive array of equipment, including large Augspurger monitor systems and the ‘Manley Tower of Power.’ However, the Embassy team stresses that while the gear is top-tier, the expertise and experience of the professionals using it are paramount. “Even the gear within these walls can’t rival a producer’s experience and expertise,” they noted.

Designed for Flexibility and Inspiration

Embassy Studios is structured as a complete creative campus, with each room possessing a distinct purpose but interconnected via a Dante-enabled infrastructure. This allows for seamless transitions between spaces and customizable workflows for clients.

Flagship Studio A: Premium Recording Suites

The two flagship Studio A rooms are engineered for major recording projects. Studio A1 features an SSL Origin console, Augspurger Duo 15 and Sub 18 monitors, and ATC SCM20ASL speakers, all connected to a live room with 20-foot windows offering stunning views of the Empire State Building and the Manhattan skyline. Studio A2, centered around an SSL AWS 948 console, serves as a second premium recording suite, enabling simultaneous sessions or expanded productions across multiple rooms.

Studio B: Songwriting and Production Hubs

The two Studio B rooms are dedicated to songwriting, production, vocal recording, and mixing. Each is equipped with an SSL Matrix2 Delta console and includes an ISO booth, providing an efficient workflow ideal for producers and writers while remaining fully integrated with the rest of the facility.

Specialized Spaces for Diverse Creative Needs

Beyond the main recording studios, Embassy offers a variety of specialized spaces:

  • Production Rooms: Two dedicated rooms for programming, editing, and writing.
  • Dolby Atmos Mix Room: For immersive audio mixing.
  • Podcast Room: A dedicated space for podcast production.
  • Multimedia Room: Acoustically treated for interviews, livestreams, press events, content creation, and live performances, all with panoramic city views.

Vanessa Sanchez, COO at Embassy Studios, highlighted the facility’s adaptability: “Every room was thoughtfully designed to be flexible and adaptable, with Dante-enabled infrastructure allowing clients to customise each space to fit their project needs.” She cited a recent 50-person artist camp where all studios were in use simultaneously, with the live and multimedia rooms transformed into writing and production spaces, demonstrating the built-in flexibility.

The Room as Part of the Signal Chain

A significant investment at Embassy Studios has been dedicated to the acoustics and the physical design of the rooms themselves. “The acoustics and the rooms themselves,” stated Sean Park, Resident Engineer, when asked about the biggest investment. “People often focus on the gear, but the environment you are working in also matters a lot. Having the right acoustics and listening environment gives people confidence to make better creative decisions. In many ways, the room becomes another piece of the signal chain.”

The impact of these thoughtfully designed spaces on artists is profound. “When artists walk into a great-sounding room, it changes the energy of the session. They become more engaged, more confident in what they’re hearing, and those moments often lead to better performances and better records,” Park added.

B-Hall, another Resident Engineer, emphasized the human element as the most crucial investment: “This may sound a little cheesy, but to me, the biggest investment in the studio has always been the Embassy team itself.” He also reiterated the importance of the room’s detail and sound quality, noting that the acousticians were meticulous in every decision. The involvement of Augspurger specialists to tune the speakers post-session further ensures accuracy and translatability for every artist.

Cutting-Edge Gear and Budget-Friendly Essentials

Embassy Studios continually updates its impressive gear collection. The latest addition includes the Manley Dual Band EQs, enhancing the ‘Manley Tower of Power.’ Steven “RAWQWLTY” Tejeda, Resident Engineer, praised their sonic performance, noting they combine Manley’s signature richness with modern clarity and top-end extension.

Despite the high-end focus, the studio also values essential, budget-friendly gear. The Apollo Twin is cited for its efficiency in recording, mixing, and mastering, offering a fast and effective solution for some clients. “Whatever gets you closest to the artist vision will always matter more than how expensive your gear is,” commented Sean Park.

B-Hall pointed to TRS-to-TT cables as a surprisingly essential budget item. These cables facilitate a true plug-and-play experience, allowing artists to seamlessly connect their personal laptop and interface setups directly into the studio’s infrastructure, whether through preamps, compressors, the SSL board, or monitors. This bridges the gap between familiar home workflows and the studio’s professional environment.

The ‘Record Anywhere’ Philosophy in Practice

Embassy Studios champions a “record anywhere” approach, enabled by its interconnected infrastructure. This flexibility allows artists to record in various settings – from large live rooms to intimate vocal booths or even a lounge sofa – according to their preference. “Having all of our rooms connected through both analogue and digital infrastructure gives us the flexibility to cater to however people like to work, rather than forcing them into one way of recording,” explained Sean Park.

This adaptability also means each room can function as an isolated recording space. For bands tracking individually, the lounge or other rooms can be converted into makeshift booths, with artists remaining connected via in-room cameras. This approach ensures that the studio caters to diverse workflows, rather than dictating a single method.

Debunking Myths and Embracing Service

Sean Park addressed a common music production myth: that gear alone makes artists sound great. He asserted, “Gear can absolutely help you get to the sound you are after, but it’s really the collaboration between the artist, producer, and engineer that shapes the record.” The artist’s performance, the producer’s vision, and the engineer’s sonic execution are key, with gear serving as a tool to capture and enhance.

Resident Engineers also shared impactful career lessons. B-Hall recalled a coach’s mantra: “If you’re early, you’re on time. If you’re on time, you’re late. And if you’re late, you’re fired!” This philosophy translates into meticulous preparation, ensuring sessions flow smoothly. He also stressed the importance of removing ego from the mixing process, understanding that engineering is a service focused on realizing the artist’s vision rather than showcasing technical prowess.

Embassy Studios represents a forward-thinking approach to creative spaces, blending luxury, cutting-edge technology, and a deep understanding of the collaborative process to empower artists in New York City and beyond.
