England’s World Cup Bronze Match: A Tale of What Might Have Been
SHARE

In a dramatic and high-scoring encounter that ultimately secured them the bronze medal, England showcased a level of performance reminiscent of World Cup champions, albeit too late to contest the final. The match, a chaotic yet exhilarating affair, saw England display flashes of brilliance that contrasted sharply with their earlier performances in the tournament. While the 10-goal thriller against France was a testament to their potential, it also amplified the lingering question of why such form wasn’t evident in crucial earlier stages.

A Game of Two Halves

For the first 45 minutes, England played with the conviction and skill of world-beaters. However, the subsequent period saw a significant dip in performance, raising concerns about consistency. Despite this inconsistency, the match concluded with notable individual achievements. Bukayo Saka etched his name in history by becoming only the fourth Englishman to score a World Cup hat-trick, joining legendary figures like Geoff Hurst, Gary Lineker, and Harry Kane. Furthermore, Jude Bellingham’s late goal marked a historic moment, making England the first team ever to score six goals against France in the competition.

While the result would have been cause for widespread celebration under different circumstances, it was tinged with regret. The vibrant and dynamic display against France suggested a capability that seemed absent in matches against Argentina, Norway, DR Congo, Panama, and Ghana. This performance hinted at a potential that, if consistently applied, could have led to a different outcome in the tournament.

Managerial Decisions and Player Impact

The performance also brought into focus the tactical decisions made by manager Thomas Tuchel. His team, which had adopted a desperately defensive stance in a crucial 36-minute period against Argentina, found themselves four goals up within 45 minutes against France. This attacking resurgence, even against a seemingly weakened and perhaps complacent French side, offered a stark contrast.

Tuchel, whose team had previously struggled to hold onto a slender lead against Argentina, faced the prospect of squandering a significant advantage once more. However, in this instance, he opted against switching to a defensive five-man formation. The match, featuring seven changes apiece for both teams, highlighted England’s squad depth. This depth, however, also underscored the frustration that some key attacking players were denied the opportunity to influence earlier, more critical matches.

Bukayo Saka was a prime example, having been overlooked when Tuchel implemented a more conservative approach previously. His performance against France served as a potent reminder of the attacking alternative. Similarly, Marcus Rashford, who only entered the game in the final moments of a prior match, demonstrated the additional attacking impetus England could have deployed.

If Tuchel’s strategy was intended to leverage the speed of wingers, the attacking players in this game proved just how dangerous they can be. As Tuchel orchestrated an emphatic response to the team’s earlier disappointment, with assistant Anthony Barry noting England played with “broken hearts,” the success of the strategy also served as an implicit critique of past approaches.

Individual Brilliance and Historical Context

There was a certain irony in the scorer of England’s second goal: Ezri Konsa. Konsa was notably introduced in one of Tuchel’s most criticized substitutions against Argentina, a move that backfired. In this match, however, Konsa, playing in a back four, advanced to head in a corner, showcasing his offensive contribution.

Tuchel might find some sympathy in the fact that this performance allowed Declan Rice to shine at his best, a level of dominance that had been somewhat hampered by recent injuries and illness. Rice was instrumental, scoring the opening goal and contributing to the second. The victory owed a significant debt to Arsenal’s influence, with Rice and Saka, both Arsenal players, accounting for four goals and two assists between them.

Rice captained the side in the absence of Harry Kane, who was rested due to what Tuchel described as too many “kilometres in the legs.” This raises the possibility that Saka and Rashford, conversely, may have had too few. Ivan Toney, who had seen limited action previously, was a surprise starter, while Kobbie Mainoo’s World Cup ended without any playing time due to injury.

Morgan Rogers also featured, a player Chelsea were reportedly set to acquire for a substantial fee. However, the evidence from this match suggested his market value might be considerably less than that of Saka or Rice. Rogers opened the scoring for England with a powerful shot from 25 yards after intercepting a pass, and his corner led to Konsa’s header.

Saka then took center stage. Alongside Rashford, he orchestrated a dazzling counter-attack. After Saka’s effort was cleared off the line, Rashford assisted him for England’s third goal. Saka completed his hat-trick by converting a penalty, awarded after Djed Spence was fouled by Malo Gusto during a surging run.

French Resilience and Tournament Records

Despite England’s commanding performance, France mounted a formidable comeback. After manager Didier Deschamps introduced four substitutes, his team responded by scoring four goals. This surge was significantly powered by Kylian Mbappé, who broke scoring records. A brace from Mbappé saw him surpass Lionel Messi’s tally, at least temporarily, to become the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer. Mbappé now has 22 goals to Messi’s 21, and his achievement of scoring 10 goals in a single World Cup mirrors Gerd Müller’s feat, positioning him as a strong favorite for the Golden Boot.

Bradley Barcola, who scored from an Mbappé pass, was one of the halftime substitutes. Michael Olise, another impactful introduction, provided the assists for Mbappé’s goals, bringing his tournament total to seven assists, another record. Ousmane Dembele, also introduced at halftime, scored to make it 5-4, only for Bellingham to equalize for England.

The match was historic not only for its scoreline but also for marking Didier Deschamps’ 187th and final game as France manager, and his 290th appearance for the nation overall, including his playing career. The French comeback echoed their resilience in the 2022 final, though a defeat was not the farewell Deschamps might have envisioned.

Conclusion: A Glimpse of Potential

Thomas Tuchel, who expressed a desire to continue his managerial role, can point to this tournament as England’s most successful World Cup since 1966. With six victories and a third-place playoff win, England surpassed their achievements in 1990 and 2018. However, this emphatic performance against France ultimately served to highlight what might have been, underscoring the lost opportunity in earlier stages of the competition.
