Europe’s Shrinking Rivers: What the Discoveries Reveal and Australia’s Lessons
SHARE

Unprecedented low water levels in Europe’s major rivers have led to startling discoveries, including ancient mammoth remains and the re-emergence of sunken World War II warships. These events, occurring amidst prolonged heatwaves and drought conditions across central and eastern Europe, highlight the severe impact of climate change on vital water systems. The situation serves as a stark warning for other regions, including Australia, which faces its own unique challenges with declining river health.

Unusual Discoveries Emerge from Receding Waters

In late July, Serbian fishermen witnessed an extraordinary sight as the Danube River, Europe’s second-longest, receded to reveal previously submerged historical artifacts. Among the most significant finds were the skeletal remains of what is believed to be a woolly mammoth, a discovery hailed by historians as exceptionally important. Additionally, rusted hulls and broken masts of German warships from World War II surfaced near the village of Prahovo. Zoran Lovric, a local fisherman, described the scene as unprecedented, noting that these wrecks have always been completely underwater until now.

These historical revelations are a direct consequence of severe drought conditions gripping parts of Europe. Prolonged summer heatwaves have drastically reduced water levels, impacting not only the visibility of submerged objects but also the health of river ecosystems.

Ecological Threats to European Rivers

The ecological ramifications of these low river levels are profound. Armin Fojskic, a member of the Zenica Fishermen Association, expressed grave concerns about potential mass fish die-offs if the dry conditions persist. “Low levels of water are critical for the fish, especially if it is extremely low, and these past days it has really been extremely low,” Fojskic stated. The primary danger, he explained, is the reduction of dissolved oxygen in the water. As water flow diminishes, rivers lose their capacity to sustain aquatic life, leading to suffocation.

Data from the European Drought Observatory indicated that approximately half of Europe and the United Kingdom were experiencing drought of varying intensities in July. This widespread dryness has also fueled major wildfires across the continent.

Climate Change as a Driving Force

Experts emphasize that these extreme weather events are not merely cyclical fluctuations. Hydro-climatologist Peter Gleick, co-founder of the Pacific Institute, asserts that the current situation is exacerbated by human-induced climate change. “Weather is always variable. We always have droughts. We always have floods somewhere at some time… but what we’re seeing now is extreme events worsened by human-caused climate change,” Gleick explained. He attributes the increased frequency and intensity of such events to the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which is warming the planet and disrupting weather patterns.

Gleick pointed out that the water system challenges observed in Europe are mirrored globally. He cited the Colorado River in the western United States, a vital water source for seven states and Mexico, which is currently at record low levels. Major reservoirs along the Colorado River are also experiencing unprecedented declines.

Australia’s Murray-Darling Basin: A Case Study in Decline

The impact of dwindling water resources is not confined to the Northern Hemisphere. Nick Bond, director of freshwater ecosystems at La Trobe University, highlighted the long-term decline of Australia’s Murray-Darling Basin, the country’s largest river system. Spanning significant portions of New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, and parts of Queensland, South Australia, and Victoria, the basin encompasses 77,000 kilometers of rivers.

Bond noted a consistent pattern of reduced runoff across the basin’s rivers. Certain areas are experiencing increasingly prolonged periods where rivers cease to flow altogether. These low water levels have been linked to severe environmental consequences, including mass fish kills, loss of wetlands, and harmful algal blooms.

Water Use and Management in the Basin

Irrigated agriculture is a major consumer of water within the Murray-Darling Basin, accounting for an estimated 80 to 90 percent of total water usage. To address the strain on water resources, legal limits on water extraction were established in 2012. The Murray-Darling Basin Authority is currently undertaking a review of this plan, aiming to enhance its effectiveness and efficiency, particularly in adapting to a changing climate characterized by hotter, drier weather and more extreme droughts.

The Importance of Small Waterways and Indigenous Knowledge

Bond also stressed the critical, yet often overlooked, impact on smaller streams that feed into larger rivers. These smaller waterways constitute a substantial portion of the overall river network, and their decline significantly affects biodiversity and flow levels throughout the system.

Bradley Moggridge, a hydro-geologist at the University of Technology Sydney and a member of the Kamilaroi people, emphasized the deep cultural and spiritual significance of the Murray-Darling Basin, known as Baaka by the Barkindji people. The waterway is integral to the identity and traditions of over 40 Indigenous nations whose lands it traverses. Moggridge shared the profound distress of the Barkindji people, who view themselves as “the river people,” witnessing the degradation of the Baaka with a sense of helplessness.

“The Barkindji [people] say they saw the river change and they could do nothing about it,” Moggridge recounted. “The Barkindji are very much closely connected to the Baaka. They are the river people, the Baaka people. For them to feel helpless on their own land, I think the management has to change. But also, what is happening upstream to cause these low flows?”

Moggridge advocates for the integration of First Nations’ traditional knowledge, accumulated over tens of thousands of years, into river management strategies. He believes that Indigenous understanding of the environment, passed down through oral traditions, stories, and songs, offers invaluable insights for protecting waterways in the face of climate change.

Review and Consultation

The Murray-Darling Basin Plan Review involved a public consultation period from February to May of this year. The Murray-Darling Basin Authority reported engaging with over 2,900 participants, including more than 500 individuals and groups from First Nations communities. The authority also conducted outreach in nearly 100 towns and regional centers to gather input on the plan’s future direction.

Conclusion: A Global Challenge Requiring Local Action

The dramatic revelations from Europe’s shrinking rivers underscore a global environmental crisis driven by climate change. The resurfacing of ancient and historical artifacts serves as a tangible, albeit unusual, indicator of the extreme hydrological shifts occurring worldwide. For Australia, the ongoing challenges within the Murray-Darling Basin, coupled with the profound insights from First Nations’ custodianship, highlight the urgent need for adaptive, integrated, and culturally sensitive water management strategies. Addressing these issues requires a concerted effort to mitigate climate change while implementing robust local solutions to protect these vital natural resources for future generations.
