FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem confirms Formula 1’s return to V8 engines, potentially as early as 2030—a move that excites fans of the sport’s classic eras.
Background on the Engine Shift
Teams phased out V8 engines in 2014, replacing them with 1.6-liter V6 turbo-hybrid units. These powerplants continue into the 2026 season with a balanced 50/50 split between combustion and electrical power. However, drivers and fans criticize the current setup for altering racing dynamics.
Four-time champion Max Verstappen compared the style to “Mario Kart.” While minor tweaks occurred before the recent Miami Grand Prix, many drivers demand bolder changes.
FIA’s Push for Earlier V8 Return
Ben Sulayem states the FIA can mandate V8 engines without opposition in 2031 under existing regulations. Yet, leaders aim to accelerate this to 2030 if power unit manufacturers approve.
“It’s coming,” Ben Sulayem said. “In 2031, the FIA will have the power to do it, without any votes from the PUMs [power unit manufacturers]. That’s the regulations.”
He targets 2030, one year ahead of schedule. “We want to bring it one year earlier, which everyone now is asking for,” he added. “What will come, will come, and it will come back to the FIA. I’m targeting 2030.”
Manufacturers support the shift, Ben Sulayem notes, potentially enabling the change 12 months sooner. Even without their vote, V8 engines arrive by 2031. He rules out a V10 revival.
Simplifying Power Units
The new V8 setup prioritizes simplicity over complexity. “The mission will be less complication, not like now,” Ben Sulayem explained. “When the MGU-H was there before, it was there to serve a purpose, but none of the manufacturers benefited from it in the real world. Now, with just the MGU-K, it’s the same engine. It’s turbo, it’s 1.6 litre.”
Manufacturers also favor the return. “They want it to happen,” he said. “Let’s say the manufacturers don’t [vote for it], then one more year and it will be done. It’s not a matter of, ‘Do I need their support?’ No, it will be done. V8 is coming.”
2026 Season Update
The 2026 campaign reaches its fourth race, with Kimi Antonelli securing his third straight victory in Miami. The Canadian Grand Prix follows on May 25 (AEST), then the iconic Monaco Grand Prix in June shifts focus to Europe.
