Millions of Freeview viewers across the UK face potential TV signal disruptions this weekend due to a high-pressure weather system delivering warm sunshine. These conditions elevate signals from local transmitters into the upper atmosphere, weakening reception, while allowing distant transmissions to interfere with nearby services.
The disruptions could persist through Monday as the high-pressure system lingers. Freeview warns: “Viewers across parts of the UK could experience disruption to TV reception from Friday 24 April to Sunday 26 April 2026 due to high pressure affecting the signals Freeview uses. You are advised not to retune your TV during this time. Reception should return once the high pressure passes.”
Why High Pressure Affects Freeview
Weather-related signal issues occur several times annually. High pressure alters atmospheric conditions, bending radio waves unexpectedly and causing temporary blackouts for aerial-dependent TVs.
Alternative Ways to Watch Live TV
Users with internet-connected smart TVs can bypass aerial problems via Freeview Play, streaming live and on-demand content. These devices support apps like BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, and Channel 5.
Download the free Freeview mobile app for smartphone or tablet viewing. Another reliable option is Freely, a broadband-based streaming service offering over 50 live and on-demand channels. Freely includes pause-live-TV functionality, personalized recommendations, and an interactive guide for current and upcoming programs, unaffected by weather.
