Greg Delaney: Family’s Plea in 1989 Cold Case
SHARE

The family of Greg Delaney, who vanished from his Geelong home in July 1989 at the age of 21, is making a renewed appeal for information as part of National Missing Persons Week. His brother, Paul Delaney, and mother, Pamela, are urging anyone with knowledge of Greg’s disappearance to come forward, hoping to finally bring closure to a decades-long mystery. While they hold little hope that Greg is still alive, the family desperately seeks any evidence that could confirm his fate and provide a grave to visit.

A Brother’s Memory and a Mother’s Grief

Paul Delaney fondly remembers his childhood with Greg on their family farm near Portland in western Victoria. The brothers shared a close bond, spending their days riding motorbikes and horses, and playing tennis. “We did everything together,” Paul shared. However, this close relationship was shattered on July 12, 1989, when Greg disappeared from the family residence in Whittington (now St Albans Park), Geelong. Greg was 21 at the time of his disappearance.

His mother, Pamela, expressed the profound grief that still affects the family. “I’ve said to the police, find me a finger, something that I can prove is Greg, and I can bury it and say, ‘goodnight, goodbye’,” she stated, highlighting the family’s deep yearning for certainty. She believes that if Greg were alive, he would have contacted her. The loss of their eldest son has been a source of enduring pain for Pamela, who has three other sons.

The Night of the Disappearance

In July 1989, Greg was employed as a chef at the Greenmount Resort on the Gold Coast, Queensland. He had returned to Victoria to visit his family, who had relocated to Geelong in 1988. The night before he vanished, July 11, Greg was at the family home in the Ottoman Court house. Paul recalls waking up between 3 am and 4 am to find Greg in the lounge area, reportedly agitated and talking to himself. Paul suggested Greg go for a walk to clear his head, during which Greg tripped over a lamp. The noise roused their father, Paddy, who emerged from his room. Shortly after this interaction, Greg left the house.

When Greg did not return the following night, the police were notified. Extensive searches were conducted but yielded no clues regarding his whereabouts. Greg was described as being approximately 165 centimeters tall, with a medium build, brown hair, blue eyes, and a fair complexion. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, white Adidas sneakers, and a jumper characterized by black and white squares.

Possible Scenarios and Lingering Fears

Paul Delaney suggested that Greg might have hitchhiked to visit his girlfriend, who lived in northern New South Wales at the time. This possibility has raised concerns, particularly given the timeline and the later emergence of serial killer Ivan Milat’s crimes. Milat was known to have targeted hitchhikers along the Hume Highway west of Sydney in the years following Greg’s disappearance. Paul fears that his brother may have fallen victim to such violence.

To aid the investigation, the Australian Federal Police have released an age-progressed image depicting what Greg might look like today, at 58 years old, if he were still alive. Detective Leading Senior Constable Mark Woodhead of the Geelong Crime Investigation Unit emphasized that the case remains open. “This investigation remains open so if anyone has any information, no matter how small, now is the time to come forward,” he urged.

A Call for Closure

Greg’s father, Paddy, passed away in 2003 without knowing what happened to his son. The family’s enduring hope is to find concrete evidence that will allow them to understand Greg’s fate and finally have a place to mourn him. The mystery surrounding Greg’s disappearance continues to cast a long shadow over the Delaney family, and their appeal serves as a poignant reminder of the many unresolved cases of missing persons in Australia.

Anyone with information regarding Greg Delaney’s disappearance is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report via their website at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
