High Street Faces Significant Closures This Weekend
A notable wave of store closures is set to impact high street retailers this coming weekend, affecting several well-known brands. This ongoing trend is attributed to persistent challenges such as declining customer traffic, elevated business rates, and unsustainable operating expenses.
Major Retailers Announce Branch Shutters
Several prominent high street chains are scheduled to cease operations at specific locations. Among these are Marks & Spencer (M&S), Quiz, and FatFace, as these companies strategize to adapt to evolving consumer demands.
Marks & Spencer Undergoes Closures
Marks & Spencer will see its outlet at Riverside Retail Park in Warrington permanently close its doors. Additionally, its Foodhall located within the Friars Walk Shopping Centre in Newport is also confirmed for closure. The Warrington branch, a 6,000 sq ft space that opened less than a year ago, supplied fashion, homeware, and beauty items to the local community. The retailer has stated that the closure, effective June 21, is a result of the location’s performance not meeting expectations.
Furthermore, on June 20, the supermarket giant will also close its Newport store, a significant facility valued at £117 million. This closure has been described by some as a severe blow to the town center’s economy. The company cited shifts in consumer behavior and the expiration of the store’s lease at the end of the month as contributing factors to the decision.
Quiz Ceases All Operations
In the fashion sector, Quiz is set to close all of its remaining twenty stores this Saturday, June 20. Prior to this, the clothing chain operated 40 standalone stores across the United Kingdom. Administrators were appointed earlier this year to manage the winding-down process of the business.
FatFace Closes Long-Standing Shop
Another retail entity, FatFace, has announced the closure of its long-established shop in Hitchin, with operations ceasing on June 20. In a released statement, the company expressed gratitude to its customers for their support over the years and confirmed efforts to reassign staff members to other roles within the company.
