Manchester United legend Jaap Stam believes Harry Kane represents the ideal striker to elevate the club back to the pinnacle of English football. Stam questions the decision to abandon pursuit of the England captain three years ago.
Missed Opportunity with Kane
United long admired Kane and targeted him in the summer of 2023 after Cristiano Ronaldo’s mid-season exit. Club officials hesitated to engage in a costly bidding war they deemed unwinnable. They also recognized Kane’s Champions League aspirations favored stronger European contenders.
Kane ended his 19-year Tottenham tenure with a £95 million move to Bayern Munich. There, he has netted 140 goals and provided 33 assists in 145 appearances, solidifying his status as a top attacker.
Instead, United signed Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta for £38 million. The Dane struggled in his first two seasons before a loan to Napoli last summer.
Stam still ponders the ‘what if’ scenario, even as Kane secures a second Bundesliga title this season. “He was linked to Manchester United once, and we keep thinking about that, but we don’t want to dwell on it anymore,” Stam said. “However, he is the type of player we needed to score goals because, in every aspect, a striker needs to play like that.”
Kane’s Bayern Munich fell short in the Champions League semi-finals, losing 6-5 on aggregate to PSG. Stam predicts this setback fuels Kane’s drive. “I think Harry Kane needs to win a major trophy as an individual,” Stam added. “I’ve seen him play so many times now, especially lately, over the last couple of years, even at Bayern. It’s a great team, and there’s a lot of pressure there.”
Stam praises Kane’s all-around game: “If you watch him play, you see how effective he is, not only scoring goals but also dropping deeper, linking up the play, and his high work-rate. I think he is a great, great professional. Considering his character and great personality, he really needs to win a trophy.”
Interest in Rafael Leao
Recent links connect United to AC Milan’s Rafael Leao, whose future remains uncertain. Reports suggest Milan may sell the 26-year-old Portuguese winger this summer due to inconsistent performances.
A 1999 treble winner with United, Stam endorses Leao’s potential but urges caution. “Leao is also a good player. He has shown his potential at Milan, of course, in what he can do. I think he is a player that should be on the list of targets for Manchester United,” Stam stated.
He proposes a swap with Marcus Rashford: “Maybe a swap between Rafael Leao and Marcus Rashford could work.” Stam emphasizes mentality: “You need to have a look not only at the skill of a player, but also at the mentality of players… You need to consider the situation where the club is, what player they are bringing in that is going to help the club going forward.”
Kobbie Mainoo’s Resurgence
Under interim manager Michael Carrick, Kobbie Mainoo has revived his United career after being sidelined by Ruben Amorim. Speculation about a January exit faded as Mainoo reclaimed his spot and signed a long-term contract.
“Kobbie Mainoo staying will be a great signing,” Stam said. He criticizes Amorim’s view that Mainoo didn’t fit his system: “According to Ruben Amorim, Kobbie Mainoo didn’t fit in his system. There were talks about him leaving the club, which was, of course, unthinkable for us as ex-players.”
Stam highlights United’s youth tradition: “I think that’s what United stands for, helping young players be successful and having a connection with the academy.” He lauds Mainoo’s attributes in Carrick’s 4-3-3: “You can see now in this system that he’s such a good player. Technically, he’s so good on the ball. He’s got skills. His positional play is good.”
“I’m very happy, and I think everybody within the club is very happy that he will sign a new deal,” Stam concluded.
Midfield Overhaul on Horizon
United plans to target central midfielders like Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali. With Champions League qualification adding fixtures, Stam recommends two additions.
“Everybody talks about replacing Casemiro, who had a great season this year,” Stam noted. Casemiro adapted well, gaining fitness and impact. Still, reinforcements are essential: “They need to bring in one, or perhaps even two, extra midfield players who have the legs and the ability on the ball to handle the build-up and guide the team alongside Kobbie Mainoo.”
This setup allows Bruno Fernandes to thrive as a No. 10. “If you qualify for the Champions League and have more games to play in a season, your squad needs to be strengthened,” Stam emphasized.
