Actor Jason Lewis Appears to Shift Opinion on Kim Cattrall
Jason Lewis, known for his role as the charming Smith Jerrod in the iconic series Sex and the City, has seemingly reversed his public stance on co-star Kim Cattrall. This development comes amidst the widely publicized feud between Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker, which significantly impacted the popular show.
Lewis, 54, originally garnered widespread praise for his portrayal of the kind-hearted waiter-turned-actor, and his on-screen chemistry with Cattrall’s character, Samantha Jones, was a fan favorite. However, in 2018, Lewis appeared to firmly align himself with Sarah Jessica Parker, referring to her as a “gracious lady” and making a pointed remark about Cattrall: “if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”
A Shift in Perspective on Social Media
Recent interactions on Instagram suggest a change in Lewis’s perspective. While promoting a new collaboration with Owl’s Brews, a video was shared that included references to the romance between Smith and Samantha. A fan commented enthusiastically, “that Samantha call back was EVERYTHINGGGGG!! He knows his base.” Lewis responded directly to this comment, stating, “Smith was nothing without her.”
This sentiment resonated with many followers, leading to an outpouring of support for the on-screen couple. One fan expressed, “In an alternate reality smith and Samantha made it they were end game in my book.”
Lewis’s Character and Relationship Arc
In Sex and the City, Lewis’s character, Smith Jerrod, began as a young waiter and aspiring actor who became romantically involved with Samantha Jones. Samantha, utilizing her public relations expertise, significantly aided his career, helping him secure a major modeling contract that eventually led to acting roles. Their relationship, initially casual, evolved into a serious commitment, particularly after Smith provided crucial support to Samantha during her battle with breast cancer.
By the series finale in 2004, Smith and Samantha were still together and deeply in love. Lewis reprised his role in the 2008 film Sex and the City: The Movie, where the characters had separated after Samantha relocated to Los Angeles. He returned for the 2010 sequel, Sex and the City 2, with indications that Smith and Samantha remained on amicable terms, as evidenced by Smith inviting her to be his date at the premiere of his new action film.
Past Comments and the Ongoing Feud
Lewis’s 2018 remarks caused considerable surprise among fans. At that time, he stated, “Mmhmm…if you can’t say something nice don’t say anything at all. Listen, I have to say that Sarah was always just so lovely and such a consummate professional and I think that people should remember their graciousness and the things that have been given to them. And I’m gonna stop there because I’ve got nothing good to say.”
When questioned on Instagram about whether his recent comments indicated he was on “team Sarah,” Lewis reportedly replied, “I might just have to say yeah…what a gracious lady. She was always so good to me.”
Lewis has previously stated that he would not be appearing in the Sex and the City revival, …And Just Like That. In a 2021 interview, he mentioned that he had not been approached to return to the franchise, adding, “As much as I appreciate the flattery, the conversation is about the girls.” Filming for the revival commenced later that spring.
Kim Cattrall reportedly received a substantial sum for a brief cameo as Samantha Jones in the second season finale of …And Just Like That, a return that was negotiated directly with HBO Max chairman and CEO Casey Bloys. Rumors of on-set tensions and disagreements have persisted for years, dating back to the original series’ run.
Cattrall’s Public Statements
In 2017, Cattrall publicly stated that Sarah Jessica Parker could have been more supportive during their time working together on Sex and the City and its subsequent films. “I don’t know what her issue is, I never have,” Cattrall commented at the time.
The friction became more pronounced in February 2018, following a public expression of sympathy from Parker regarding the death of Cattrall’s brother. Cattrall responded on Instagram, writing, “My Mom asked me today ‘When will that @sarahjessicaparker, that hypocrite, leave you alone?’ Let me make this VERY clear. (If I haven’t already) You are not my family. You are not my friend. So I’m writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy in order to restore your ‘nice girl’ persona.””
