Kate Garraway shared a warm moment with broadcaster Liam Halligan as he geared up for a grueling 300km charity tandem bike ride from London to Paris.
Epic 24-Hour Cycling Challenge
The Good Morning Britain host, 59, posed for photos with Liam and his cycling partner Serge Kogan before their departure from the capital. Liam shared an update on X: ‘It’s today! London-to-Paris in 24 hours, 300km, on a tandem.’
The duo aims to complete the ride in just 24 hours to raise funds for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a condition Liam was diagnosed with in childhood.
Longtime Friendship Blossoms
Liam, 56, an award-winning journalist and Sunday Telegraph columnist, has known Kate for over 20 years. Both recently became single under difficult circumstances—Kate after losing her husband Derek Draper to Covid-19 complications in January 2024.
During a recent Talk TV appearance on Mark Dolan’s show, Liam described their bond: ‘I’ve known her for a long time, I knew Derek… In recent years for different reasons, we have both become single, against our wishes. So, in recent weeks and months, Kate and I have become good friends.’
He added: ‘We were reintroduced. Kate and a lot of friends came to see my band The Hooligans play in Saffron Walden… Kate and I are good friends, it’s early days, we’ll see what happens.’
Pub Outing in Saffron Walden
Kate joined Liam in his Essex hometown over the weekend at The Railway Arms pub, where he performed with his band. Witnesses noted the pair appeared close, enjoying the lively atmosphere filled with singing and dancing.
A source close to the couple said: ‘Kate has formed a close friendship with Liam and they really enjoy one another’s company. Liam makes her laugh, he is very funny… It’s lovely to see Kate smiling again.’
Neighbors buzzed about meeting Kate, and reports indicate she has visited Liam’s home several times recently. Liam, a single father to a son and daughters Maeve and Ailis, shares mutual friends with Kate and her late husband.
Kate continues to raise children Darcey, 20, and Billie, 16, in their north London home while navigating life after Derek’s passing following his long Covid battle since March 2020.
