Comedian’s Parody Sparks Outrage
Jimmy Kimmel faced sharp criticism for a joke about Melania Trump appearing as an ‘expectant widow’ during a parody of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on his show Thursday. The remark, made just days before gunfire disrupted the actual event, drew accusations of poor taste from online commentators.
In the skit honoring journalism and scholarships, Kimmel commented, ‘Our First Lady, Melania, is here. Look at Melania, so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow.’ He followed with a quip about her upcoming birthday: ‘Melania’s birthday is on Sunday. She’s planning to celebrate at home the same way she always does, looking out a window and whispering, “What have I done?”‘
Shooting Disrupts High-Profile Event
The real White House Correspondents’ Dinner unfolded Saturday evening at the Washington Hilton, drawing President Trump for his first in-person attendance while in office. Chaos erupted as guests, including journalists, celebrities, and officials like Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, ducked for cover amid loud noises.
Secret Service agents swarmed the ballroom, with attendees huddling under tables. The incident echoed history, occurring at the same venue where President Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981. No guests were harmed, but one agent was struck in his bulletproof vest and is expected to recover fully.
Suspect Identified and Manifesto Revealed
Authorities identified 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, a teacher from Torrance, California, as the suspect. Allen breached a security checkpoint armed with a shotgun, handgun, and knives, exchanging fire with agents before being tackled and arrested.
Family members disclosed Allen’s radical writings and plans to ‘fix’ the world. His brother alerted the New London Police Department in Connecticut minutes before the attack after receiving disturbing messages. A White House official confirmed the notification, though the writings did not specify the dinner. Federal authorities interviewed Allen’s sister in Rockville, Maryland.
President Trump addressed the nation two hours later, still in his tuxedo. ‘When you’re impactful, they go after you,’ he stated defiantly. ‘They seem to think he was a lone wolf. We’re not going to let anybody take over our society.’ He praised the injured agent: ‘I just spoke to the officer and he’s doing great.’
In a Fox News interview, Trump noted the local police report and expressed hope for earlier federal involvement.
Event Rescheduled Amid Heightened Alert
The White House confirmed the dinner will resume within 30 days, promising a ‘bigger and better’ gathering. Washington remains on high alert following this latest security breach targeting the president.
Online Backlash Intensifies
Critics online labeled Kimmel’s jokes ‘sick and tasteless.’ Conservative editor Larry O’Connor called the comedian a ‘broken man’ and urged Disney to address the issue. Political commentator Link Lauren accused mainstream media figures of stoking division, stating, ‘Jimmy Kimmel just made a disgusting “joke” about Melania Trump becoming a widow.’
Other reactions included claims of ‘seething hatred’ and questions about whether networks should cancel Kimmel’s show.
