Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique stands on the brink of signing a new four-year contract with the Champions League titleholders, quashing speculation about a summer move to Manchester United.
Manchester United’s Managerial Search
The Spanish tactician ranks among the leading candidates to take over from Ruben Amorim on a permanent basis at Old Trafford. Club officials have engaged in discussions with Enrique, but his commitment to PSG shifts the focus elsewhere.
Enrique’s existing agreement in Paris runs until the end of next season. PSG executives remain unperturbed by potential delays in negotiations, even if they extend into the offseason, as the club eyes another Ligue 1 crown and deep Champions League progress.
Recent developments confirm Enrique prioritizes remaining in mainland Europe over a Premier League role. Earlier concerns about Manchester United’s Champions League absence have dissipated, thanks to Michael Carrick’s interim stewardship and a crucial 3-2 victory over Liverpool that secured qualification.
Past Interest from United
Manchester United approached Enrique in 2022 amid their hunt for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s successor. Serving as Spain national team head coach at the time, he declined to depart before the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
This stance prolonged the club’s interim phase, following Solskjaer’s November 2021 dismissal and Ralf Rangnick’s temporary appointment. Erik ten Hag ultimately prevailed over Mauricio Pochettino for the position.
Carrick Addresses Speculation
Carrick, a former United midfielder and ex-Middlesbrough manager, avoids fueling rumors about his future. Ahead of the Sunderland clash, he emphasized the need for clarity.
“Clarity is important,” Carrick said. “We’ve finished strong, put ourselves in a good position and the situation of my role and what it looks like moving forward, I think it’s just the natural time. It was always spoken about towards the end of the season, if not the end of the season.”
“At this stage it’s just putting the boys in a place to finish the season strongly and then, as I’ve said all along, I’m calm about it. It’ll get sorted out when it’s going to get sorted out. It’s out of my hands, so we’ll see what happens.”
Champions League Outlook
Manchester United could face PSG in next season’s revamped Champions League, featuring an expanded league phase without traditional groups—their first appearance since 2023/24. PSG aims to defend their title, earned with a decisive win over Inter Milan in Munich last year, provided they overcome Arsenal in late May.
