A 36-year-old martial arts influencer drowned at Leblon Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, after her friends departed without her when she failed to exit the water.
Tamyris Teixeira Santos entered the surf on Saturday, April 18, during an outing at a beachfront kiosk. Her companions left for home without notifying authorities after she did not return from her swim.
Discovery and Search Efforts
Kiosk staff alerted her family the following day about abandoned personal items, prompting a frantic search. Rescuers located her body three days later on the shore at nearby Botafogo Beach.
Family Questions Delay in Alert
Elisabeth Teixeira, Tamyris’s mother, struggles to comprehend the tragedy, emphasizing her daughter’s swimming proficiency. “She said she was going there and never came back. No one has explained it,” Teixeira stated. “The beach was crowded. There’s no way someone could drown and no one would notice.”
Relatives question the friends’ decision to leave without raising an alarm, particularly since Tamyris had taken photos and videos shortly beforehand.
Police Probe Underway
Civil Police investigate the incident, analyzing CCTV footage to reconstruct her final moments. Authorities have not yet confirmed a cause of death.
Firefighters note calm sea conditions prevailed, with no emergency reports the beach area.
Background on Tamyris
Tamyris served as a lawyer and fitness advocate, excelling in jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai. She inspired 18,000 Instagram followers with training content and tributes to her hometown.
Examiners at the Medical Legal Institute now conduct forensic analysis on her body.
