Richard Osman, the acclaimed British TV presenter and co-creator of the quiz show Pointless, received an OBE from the Princess Royal at Windsor Castle on Tuesday for his contributions to literature and broadcasting. The 55-year-old was joined by his wife, actress Ingrid Oliver, 49, whom he married in December 2022, and his daughter Ruby, 28, marking her first public appearance alongside her father.
Ruby Osman’s Impressive Education
Ruby, whom Richard shares with his first wife along with son Sonny, 26, has built a distinguished career as a geopolitical advisor at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change. She attended Hills Road Sixth Form College in Cambridge, excelling in maths, French, and history with three A* grades and an A in her extended project qualification.
Ruby earned a spot at Oxford University, where she studied Chinese over four years, including a year abroad at Peking University in Beijing’s Haidian district. During her time there, she founded the Silk Road Society, a student think tank examining geopolitical and economic aspects of China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
Richard previously shared his initial concerns about Ruby studying in China. He recounted: ‘Ruby decided she wanted to study Chinese at university. However, she then decided that she actually wanted to study it in China. This, I thought, was a slightly more terrifying idea, as it meant her actually going to China.’
To ease his worries, the family visited Shanghai, an experience Richard described as one of his best decisions. They immersed themselves in the city’s culture and history, enjoyed superb local cuisine, and noted how Ruby, standing 6ft tall, was treated like a ‘goddess’ by locals.
Ruby graduated with first-class honors, earning the Gibbs Prize for the highest achievement in Chinese with an average mark of 73 across her papers.
Career Milestones and Expertise
After university, Ruby worked for two years as a freelance translator at the Central Compilation & Translation Bureau. She then joined the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change as a freelance researcher, advancing over six years to her current role as senior geopolitical advisor.
In 2024, she joined the advisory board of The British Foreign Policy Group. The following year, Ruby became a non-resident expert at the Oxford China Policy Lab. Her analyses have appeared in prominent outlets including the BBC, TIME, and Project Syndicate.
Richard Osman’s Family Privacy
Richard maintains a low profile for his family, rarely discussing his first wife or their 2007 divorce. He told The Guardian: ‘It’s not my story, if you know what I mean. It’s nothing grim; it’s just her privacy.’
Reflecting on fatherhood in The Times, Richard emphasized his commitment post-divorce: ‘When my partnership broke up, I did think, “Oh God, this is going to be awful.” I’ve seen my kids nonstop… They know I love them and I tell them nonstop.’
After his first marriage ended, Richard briefly dated jazz singer Sumudu Jayatilaka in 2018 before finding lasting love with Ingrid Oliver.
