Rishi Sunak, now MP for Richmond and Northallerton, shares a photo of himself on crutches following a skiing mishap over Easter holidays. The former prime minister attributes the minor injury to showing off on the slopes to his daughters.
The Easter Skiing Incident
In a Facebook post, Sunak explains the accident: “Pushed my luck on the slopes this Easter showing off to my daughters. I’m already on the mend and determined to keep up with my meetings and constituency work (although sadly no walks with Nova for a while). Thanks to everyone who’s been in touch. Looking forward to getting back to full fitness soon and seeing many of you in the coming weeks.”
The 45-year-old reassures constituents that the injury will not hinder his duties. He adds a light note: “Thankfully there’s no shortage of sport on TV this month!” Sunak and his family have returned from the trip, though the exact location remains undisclosed.
Family and Past Mishaps
Sunak’s daughters, Krishna, 15, and Anoushka, 13, stay largely out of the public spotlight. His wife, Akshata Murty, 45, draws attention for her background as the daughter of Indian billionaire N.R. Narayana Murthy, founder of IT giant Infosys and a key figure in India’s tech sector.
The couple’s combined net worth reaches £651 million as of May 2024, exceeding King Charles’s estimated £640 million. Murty’s stake in Infosys, at 0.94 percent, forms the bulk of their wealth. Murthy, 79, holds a fortune of about $4.1 billion (£3.1 billion) as of March this year.
Sunak, son of a GP father and pharmacist mother who moved from East Africa to Southampton in the 1960s, studied at Oxford and met Murty at Stanford on a Fulbright scholarship.
Previous Winter Sports Tumble
This is not Sunak’s first winter sports slip. In January 2022, he fell on Krishna while ice skating at London’s Natural History Museum. Onlooker Maddie, a London communications officer skating nearby, recalls: “He landed on his kid and James offered to help him up and he totally blanked him. He was skating for ten minutes before he staggered and dragged her down. People were all looking and had previously been taking pics.”
After recovering, Sunak took selfies with surprised bystanders.
Recently, Sunak grew emotional during celebrations for the Coast to Coast Walk’s recognition as one of the UK’s National Trails.
