The iconic 1997 film Spice World is poised for a comeback as the Spice Girls have successfully regained full ownership of the movie’s rights. This development comes as the film approaches its 30th anniversary next year, with the group reportedly planning a significant revival. Melanie C, also known as Sporty Spice, shared insights into the film’s future during an appearance on the Louis Theroux podcast.
Regaining Control and Future Plans
Melanie C explained that the film, a major hit upon its release, has not been readily available on streaming platforms for some time. The complex ownership structure had made its accessibility difficult. “It was kind of all over the place,” she stated, referring to the previous rights situation. “So we’ve had to come together. The Spice Girls now fully own it, so we will be presenting it at some point in hopefully the not too distant future for people to enjoy.”
The acquisition of full rights by the group signifies a new chapter for the beloved movie, promising fans a chance to experience it once again. While specific release plans and formats are yet to be announced, the intention is clear: to make Spice World accessible to a new generation and long-time fans alike.
Behind the Scenes: Cameos and Real-Life Parallels
Spice World was notable for its star-studded cast of cameos, featuring a variety of well-known personalities. However, the production also faced challenges, including the last-minute removal of a segment featuring Gary Glitter following his arrest on child pornography charges. Melanie C recalled the situation, saying, “While the movie was getting edited, we were like, ‘Oh, s***, he’s got to go’.”
The film also featured notable appearances from figures like Roger Moore, Richard E. Grant, and Michael Barrymore. Barry Humphries, in a memorable role, portrayed a media mogul reminiscent of Rupert Murdoch, attempting to uncover damaging information about the pop group.
Melanie C highlighted how the movie’s narrative closely mirrored the group’s actual experiences during their meteoric rise to fame. “Life imitated art for the pop band,” she commented. “That was really how we were. That was our experience. You know, we’d been out there, we’d been promoting for a year when we sat down and the movie was being written. So a lot of those experiences that are the through line of the movie were the things that we were experiencing.” This authenticity contributed significantly to the film’s enduring appeal.
Anniversary Aspirations and Group Dynamics
Beyond the film revival, the Spice Girls continue to explore opportunities for a reunion to commemorate their anniversary. Melanie C confirmed that discussions are ongoing regarding various potential projects. “We are discussing lots of great opportunities,” she mentioned.
However, coordinating schedules and logistics for all five members—Melanie C, Melanie B, Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell-Horner, and Victoria Beckham—remains a key challenge. “Getting everybody together to discuss those plans remains the biggest challenge: ‘We don’t have them (meetings) often enough because it’s still a business,'” Melanie C noted. She emphasized the ongoing business aspects, including trademark management and merchandise, which require attention.
Despite the complexities, the group’s desire to come together is strong. “We want to. Everything’s in discussion,” Melanie C stated. She clarified that while nothing is finalized in time for the immediate anniversary, the future holds promising possibilities. “There’s nothing in the works, so it’s obviously not going to be anything in time for the anniversary. But we are discussing lots of great opportunities.”
The Enduring Bond of the Spice Girls
Melanie C expressed optimism about the potential for all five members, including Victoria Beckham, to participate in future endeavors. “No one’s left,” she asserted. Reflecting on her identity as a Spice Girl, she added, “I love it. When I’m doing shows and stuff, and if people want to introduce me, when they say former Spice Girl, I’m really offended. Because once a Spice Girl, always a Spice Girl. I think we all feel like that. There might be times we choose not to work in that arena, but we’re still Spice Girls.”
This sentiment underscores the deep connection and shared identity the members maintain, suggesting a unified front for future projects, including the anticipated revival of their iconic film, Spice World.
