The Pivotal Moment in Munich

Delivering his speech on the second day of the conference, Starmer stated: “We are not the Britain of the Brexit years anymore.” The declaration, made just over six years after the UK’s departure from the European Union, prompted an immediate round of applause from attendees, signaling approval for the UK’s renewed commitment to continental ties.36

Call for Enhanced Security Cooperation

Starmer emphasized the interdependence of UK and European security, asserting: “There is no British security without Europe and no European security without Britain.” He urged nations to “spend more, deliver more and coordinate more” on defense amid rising tensions in Europe and the Middle East.36

The Prime Minister highlighted the US as an “indispensable ally” but stressed that European countries must assume greater responsibility for their defense in a world that has “changed fundamentally.” He advocated for “radical renewal” in alliances rather than division.3637

Context of Global Challenges

In a broader push for unity, Starmer warned against inward focus, stating: “In a dangerous world, we would not take control by turning inward, we would surrender it.” His remarks align with ongoing efforts to strengthen NATO and foster deeper UK-EU defense links.36
