Australian football icon Mark Viduka, a former Middlesbrough striker, has shared an uplifting message with the team as they prepare for their crucial Championship playoff clash against Southampton at Riverside Stadium.
Viduka’s Bond with Middlesbrough
Viduka, now 50, played for Middlesbrough from 2004 to 2007, netting 26 goals in 72 appearances. In a club video, he expressed deep affection for the club: ‘It’s Mark Viduka. Just want to say how much the club means to me. I spent three years there and had some great times, I made a lot of good friends.’
He addressed the fans directly: ‘To the fans, we had so many good nights together, it was a fond part of my career.’ Viduka wished the squad success: ‘I wish the boys at Boro the best of luck and hopefully you can get back into the Premier League where we belong.’ He ended with the local motto ‘We Shall Be,’ symbolizing defiance and pride for Teesside supporters.
Socceroos Stars in the Squad
Middlesbrough’s current roster includes Australian internationals Riley McGree and Sam Silvera. McGree, who joined in 2022, has impressed with his tenacity and goal-scoring instinct.
Playoff Push and Recent Form
Middlesbrough held top-two positions for much of the Championship season but slipped to fifth after a winless run in March and April. They enter the playoffs with momentum from a four-game unbeaten streak, aiming for a Wembley final and Premier League promotion.
Spying Controversy Heats Up Tie
Tension escalates after Middlesbrough staff at Rockliffe Park training ground spotted an individual, believed to be a Southampton performance analyst, recording sessions from behind a bush. The man deleted videos and photos from his phone and refused to identify himself.
Middlesbrough reported the incident to the English Football League (EFL), as spying violates regulations. Southampton faces charges and states it is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
