Elderly Man Cleared After Shooting Home Intruder
An elderly man who defended himself and his wife by firing a weapon at an alleged intruder following a violent home invasion will not face criminal charges. The incident occurred overnight at the couple’s residence in Torrington, a rural community located approximately 65 kilometers southwest of Tenterfield in northern New South Wales.
Violent Home Invasion Details Emerge
According to police allegations, Joshua Dylan Trethewey, 34, forced his way into the home of Keith and Di Blessing. During the confrontation, both Mr. and Mrs. Blessing were reportedly stabbed. Mrs. Blessing, 72, sustained a wound to her chest and collapsed, while her 75-year-old husband suffered a stab wound to the abdomen.
Mr. Blessing managed to contact emergency services shortly after 12:15 AM. However, before paramedics arrived, authorities allege that Trethewey attempted to re-enter the property. It was at this point that Mr. Blessing discharged his firearm, shooting at the alleged intruder.
Couple’s Condition and Police Statement
The couple remains in critical but stable condition at Gold Coast University Hospital. A police source indicated that it is highly improbable Mr. Blessing will face any charges, given the alleged circumstances surrounding the use of the firearm in self-defense.
Detective Superintendent Chris McKinnon commended Mr. Blessing’s actions, stating, “He certainly did his best, obviously under very difficult circumstances to defend himself and his partner. It was quite impressive that he was able to do that, given the extent of the injuries that he had suffered.”
Information suggests Mr. Blessing was a licensed firearm owner.
Family and Friends Express Support
The couple’s daughter shared with media outlets that her parents are exceptionally generous and honest individuals, expressing immense pride in her father’s bravery. A close friend of the Blessings described Mr. Blessing as a “great guy” who lives a peaceful life and would harm no one. He recounted how the couple would leave fruit outside their home for neighbors to take.
The friend also confirmed that Mr. Blessing was undergoing surgery for a severe stab wound, with Mrs. Blessing expected to undergo a procedure for her chest injuries later in the day.
Alleged Intruder’s Status and Charges
Trethewey, who is reportedly in serious but stable condition, is under police guard at Armidale Hospital. He has been formally charged with two counts of causing wounding or grievous bodily harm with intent to murder.
Detective Superintendent McKinnon stated that there is no indication Trethewey was known to the couple. He added, “We’re certainly investigating all the circumstances of what occurred today, but at this stage I’m unable to say why he tried to re-enter the house. To our knowledge, nothing was stolen from the residents.”
Trethewey’s bail was denied, and his court appearance was scheduled. However, the proceedings were reportedly halted as a “bedside hearing” was refused.
