Motorsport Career Resumes After Acquittal in Swiss Court

Australian racing driver Joey Mawson has announced his intention to resume his motorsport career following his acquittal on charges of rape. The 30-year-old was accused of two counts of rape against the nurse of Formula 1 icon Michael Schumacher, allegations he has consistently denied, stating the encounters were consensual.

The accusations stemmed from an incident on November 23, 2019, while Mawson was a guest at a property owned by Michael Schumacher in Gland, Switzerland. After a trial, a court delivered a verdict of not guilty, citing insufficient evidence. Officials stated Mawson was free to leave without any blemish on his character.

Mawson Issues Defiant Statement on Social Media

Breaking his silence after a three-year legal battle, Mawson shared a statement on Instagram. He expressed his relief and determination to move forward. “For the past three years, I have remained largely silent while navigating one of the most difficult periods of my life,” Mawson wrote. “During that time, I faced false allegations and the challenge of defending my name under intense public scrutiny. From the very beginning, I maintained my innocence and trusted that the truth would prevail.”

He extended gratitude to his legal team for their “tireless work” and to his family, friends, and supporters for their unwavering backing.

Return to Racing Confirmed

Mawson declared his readiness to return to the racetrack. “Today, I am turning the page,” he continued. “I am proud to announce my return to motorsport. I cannot wait to put my helmet back on, get behind the wheel, and focus on what has always been my greatest passion: racing. The past does not define me. My focus is on the future, and I am excited for what lies ahead. Thank you for continuing this journey with me. See you at the racetrack!”

Trial Details Emerge

During the proceedings in Nyon, Switzerland, the court heard that the accuser woke up in pain on blood-stained bedsheets. The indictment detailed that Mawson had spent the evening with several employees of Schumacher, during which the nurse consumed a significant amount of alcohol. She was reportedly so intoxicated that she fell and was taken to her room by staff.

Mawson testified that he had stayed at the nurse’s apartment until dawn. He explained that he had not realized the extent of her intoxication until the following morning, assuming she was less affected than he perceived at the time.

The court awarded the woman 30,000 Swiss francs (approximately $53,400) for moral damages, with the possibility of pursuing further civil action.

A Promising Career Path

Mawson was once considered one of Australia’s most promising young motorsport talents. He harbored ambitions of reaching Formula 1, a dream he often discussed, viewing Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna as his idols. He developed a close relationship with Michael Schumacher’s son, Mick, as they competed together in junior racing categories.

Early Success and Setbacks

A significant achievement in his European career was winning the 2016 ADAC Formula 4 Championship, where he secured 10 victories against a field that included future Formula 1 drivers such as Lando Norris and Guanyu Zhou.

However, his path to Formula 1 faced challenges. In 2017, competing in the European Formula 3 Championship, he achieved only one podium finish and concluded the season in 13th place, while Norris secured the championship title. The following year, he moved to GP3 with Arden International, a team associated with Red Bull’s Christian Horner. Despite a season described as “critical” for F1 prospects, he achieved two podiums but no wins, finishing 13th again, which significantly impacted his progression through the traditional F1 development ladder.

By 2019, Mawson transitioned to sports car racing, competing in Porsche Supercup and Carrera Cup Germany, but without consistent success. It was during this period that he attended the gathering at the Schumacher residence where the alleged assault occurred.

Australian Achievements and Subsequent Ban

Mawson eventually returned to Australia with the aim of revitalizing his career in the S5000 open-wheel category. In 2021, he won the Australian Drivers’ Championship Gold Star, a title previously held by Australian racing legends, and successfully defended it in 2022, becoming a two-time champion.

These successes brought him to the attention of Supercars teams in Australia, with discussions about a potential transition into touring car racing. However, his momentum was disrupted in 2023 when he tested positive for meldonium during a routine doping control. Following confirmation of both A and B samples, he received a three-year ban from motorsport in September 2024, backdated to May 2023. This ruling stripped him of results and prohibited him from sanctioned events until May 13, 2026, effectively halting his resurgence in Australia.

Mawson attributed the positive test to unknowingly consuming a supplement recommended by his then-girlfriend, which contained a prohibited ingredient. He issued a statement asserting, “I never intended to take the supplement to enhance my racing.”
