Balvinder Sopal Reflects on Mother’s Enduring Wisdom at Rainbow Honours
Actress Balvinder Sopal, known for her role as Suki Panesar in the popular BBC soap opera EastEnders, recently shared a deeply personal and heartwarming lesson imparted by her late mother. Speaking at the Rainbow Honours red carpet event in London, Sopal highlighted the simple yet powerful message her mother instilled: “To love. Just to love unconditionally.” This profound sentiment resonated with her as she celebrated the LGBTQIA+ community at the event, stating, “And that’s what it means to be here. That’s pride.”
A Mother’s Approval and On-Screen Love
Sopal also revealed that her mother was an ardent admirer of Suki’s on-screen partner, Eve Unwin. “I lost my mum a couple of years ago, but my mum was a real fan of Eve,” Sopal recounted. “She said Eve is very beautiful, and what a lovely relationship that was. So when you get the seal approval from your parents, doesn’t really matter what anyone has to say, does it.” This personal connection underscored the significance of familial acceptance in navigating public life and representation.
Championing LGBTQIA+ Storylines and Community Support
The actress expressed her pride in participating in the Rainbow Honours, an event celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community. “It’s an honour to be part of such an amazing community and accepted,” she remarked. Sopal further discussed the impact of EastEnders’ LGBTQIA+ storylines within the South Asian community, noting an unexpected level of warmth and support. While acknowledging potential challenges and unconscious biases, she observed, “I found the South Asian community to be wonderful in accepting the storylines that we have been telling on EastEnders. It’s been a challenge but a great one at the same time.”
Uplifting Public Reactions and Unexpected Fans
The public’s reaction to these storylines has often been remarkably positive, particularly from older viewers. Sopal shared an anecdote: “Often I get stopped in the street by aunties and they always go [thumbs up] you’re brilliant. At the beginning I did sort of think ‘she’s a gay character’, but it doesn’t matter, she’s still brilliant, she’s really good, we love her strength.” This feedback highlights a growing acceptance and appreciation for diverse representation on screen.
Diverting from Popular Culture and Embracing the Unpredictable
Away from her EastEnders commitments, Sopal admitted she hasn’t yet succumbed to the national obsession with the reality show The Traitors. “I haven’t watched The Traitors because I’m never sure I’m gonna understand it or not, it feels like a sort of high brow, very intellectual, intelligent show,” she quipped. However, she acknowledged her sister’s enthusiasm for the series. When prompted about more speculative topics, such as the possibility of extraterrestrial life, Sopal offered a grounded perspective: “[Aliens?] Look, anything goes, we’re in a world where anything can happen. There’s lots of people talking about lizard people and stuff like that, so I don’t know, maybe… I would say that I… no.”
