The annual Midwinter Ball, a highlight for Canberra’s political and media elite, saw a stark contrast in comedic performances this year, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reportedly winning over the crowd while Opposition Leader Angus Taylor’s stand-up routine was widely perceived as a miss. The event, known for its blend of political satire and fundraising, also featured a high-stakes charity auction that generated significant sums for good causes.

Political Wit on Display

A long-standing tradition at the Midwinter Ball involves speeches from the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader. While the specific content of these addresses is kept private, insider accounts suggest a significant difference in reception this year. Prime Minister Albanese is said to have successfully engaged the audience, even eliciting laughter with a joke about his bank account being compromised. In contrast, Angus Taylor’s comedic efforts reportedly failed to land with many attendees, who described his performance as ‘bombing’. This year’s struggle for Taylor was particularly notable given the previous year’s event, where then-Opposition Leader Sussan Ley delivered a surprisingly strong comedic performance.

High-Stakes Charity Auction

The evening’s charity auction proved to be a major draw, with several unique items fetching substantial bids. A standout lot was the opportunity to play a tennis match against Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at The Lodge, which was secured for $16,500 by mortgage broker Joseph Daoud. Daoud, founder of It’s Simple Finance, is a known critic of the government’s tax policies, having recently funded a billboard campaign against the ‘ambition tax’. The auction package includes the tennis match, hospitality, and refreshments for four guests.

Finance Minister Katy Gallagher expressed satisfaction with the auction’s success, noting the significant amount raised for charity. Deputy Liberal leader Jane Hume, also a critic of the government’s budget, humorously remarked, ‘That’s game, set and match,’ in response to the high bid for the tennis match.

Another auction item, offering a chance to be ‘wined and dined’ by Opposition Leader Angus Taylor and Deputy Liberal leader Jane Hume at Taylor’s residence, attracted a winning bid of $5,000. Hume reportedly promised her ‘Instagram-famous cocktails’ as part of the package.

Senator David Pocock also offered a unique experience: a session at Canberra Floating Saunas, which sold for $3,100. The listing promised participants a chance to ‘warm up and wind down while taking in some of Canberra’s best views’.

Notable Absences and Corporate Presence

The Midwinter Ball saw several high-profile figures absent this year. One Nation leader Pauline Hanson and her entire parliamentary team did not attend, despite Barnaby Joyce being on the official guest list. Former NSW Liberal treasurer Matt Kean, now chair of the Climate Change Authority, also missed the event. His absence followed recent scrutiny over taxpayer-funded travel expenses related to his attendance at the COP30 climate conference in Brazil, where he also participated in a panel hosted by his private sector employer.

Communications Minister Anika Wells attended solo, with her husband Finn McCarthy absent. This follows a period where Wells maintained a lower profile after repaying over $10,000 in travel expenses related to a previous expenses scandal.

The accounting firm EY, currently under scrutiny regarding allegations of improper access to Prime Minister Albanese’s banking records by a consultant on secondment, saw its chief executive David Larocca withdraw from hosting the firm’s table. Cherelle Murphy and Louise MacDonald represented EY at the event, which the firm still sponsored.

Fashion Statements on the Red Carpet

The event’s fashion choices also garnered attention. Prime Minister Albanese’s wife, Jodie Haydon, wore a striking Leo Lin gown, which was noted by his office as having been loaned. Labor frontbencher Dr. Anne Aly showcased her own craftsmanship by wearing a crocheted gown made from recycled cotton, a piece she completed in three weeks. She complemented her outfit with a necklace featuring an ancient Egyptian design, reflecting her heritage.

Victorian MP Georgie Purcell used her attire for a political statement, wearing a dress emblazoned with ‘defund dog racing’ and ‘love dogs’. Allegra Spender, MP for Wentworth, opted for a Carla Zampatti gown from the designer’s latest runway collection. In a demonstration of budget-conscious style, independent MP Nicolette Boele revealed her gown was an $18 op-shop find.

Conclusion

The Midwinter Ball once again served as a significant social and political gathering, highlighting the interplay between political humor, charitable giving, and personal style within Australia’s capital. While comedic performances offered mixed results, the charity auctions demonstrated strong engagement and generosity, underscoring the event’s dual role as a social occasion and a fundraising platform.
