Bruke Desalagne, a 33-year-old Eritrean national, has been convicted of raping an elderly man outside St. John’s Church in Harrow, north London. The assault occurred after Desalagne dragged the victim, who was reportedly intoxicated and cannot be named for legal reasons, from a public bench to a secluded grassy area behind a hoarding near the church.

Details of the Attack and Arrest

The incident unfolded on a grass verge adjacent to the church. Prosecutors stated that Desalagne moved the victim from the bench to the grassy area to commit the assault. CCTV footage captured the sequence of events, showing Desalagne dragging the man and carrying out the attack for approximately 20 minutes. During this time, the footage indicated that Desalagne would pause the assault whenever members of the public passed nearby.

The crime was discovered when a witness observed the unfolding events from her window and alerted the authorities. Police arrived at the scene to find Desalagne standing behind the church sign, with the victim lying behind it. Desalagne was arrested at the location and subsequently charged.

Legal Proceedings and Defense Arguments

During the trial at Harrow Crown Court, Desalagne, who required an interpreter, initially told police during an interview that he believed he was assisting the victim, whom he described as drunk. However, after being presented with the CCTV evidence, he ceased the interview, consulted with his solicitor, and declined to speak further or testify.

Simon Shannon, the prosecuting barrister, presented the CCTV footage to the court, highlighting how the defendant dragged the heavily intoxicated victim from the bench to the grass area. He noted Desalagne’s pauses in the assault when passersby were present.

Bibi Ihuomah, representing the defense, argued that there was insufficient evidence to prove the victim had been raped and urged the jury to avoid a ‘knee-jerk’ reaction. Desalagne reportedly remained impassive throughout the trial, sipping water as the video evidence was played.

Law Enforcement Response and Public Appeal

Detective Constable Luke Revill described Desalagne as a “dangerous offender” who specifically targeted a “defenceless, vulnerable, elderly man.” He commended the members of the public whose alert led to the swift arrest and subsequent charging and remand of the defendant.

The Metropolitan Police have reiterated their commitment to prosecuting sexual predators. They issued an appeal for anyone who has experienced similar offenses to come forward, assuring victims of support and that they will be listened to by officers. The police emphasized that individuals reporting such incidents will receive assistance throughout the process.

Conclusion

The conviction of Bruke Desalagne marks a significant outcome in a case involving a brutal assault on a vulnerable individual. The evidence presented, particularly the CCTV footage, played a crucial role in establishing the facts of the case. Law enforcement agencies continue to prioritize the investigation and prosecution of sexual offenses, encouraging victims to report incidents and seek help.
