Richard White, the co-founder of the software company WiseTech, has stepped down from his position as executive chairman. The move comes amid ongoing criminal investigations into allegations of misconduct. White will continue to serve on the company’s board as an executive director and retain his role as chief innovation officer.

Leadership Transition Amid Investigations

Raelene Murphy has been appointed as the new executive chair of WiseTech, effective immediately. The leadership change aims to address what White described as “unnecessary distraction” caused by recent personal media attention, which he believes is impacting the company. In a statement, White emphasized the need for senior management, including CEO Zubin Appoo, to focus solely on executing WiseTech’s growth strategy without external interference.

WiseTech’s share price experienced a significant drop in June following reports that the Australian Federal Police (AFP) were investigating claims that White coerced a cleaner into a sexual relationship by exploiting her financial and visa status. The AFP was also reportedly examining allegations of White providing false information on a visa application. White has consistently denied these accusations.

White’s Denial of Allegations

Richard White has strenuously and unequivocally denied the recent allegations made against him in the media. He stated, “I am conscious that personal attacks on me in the media that are unconnected to the performance of the company nevertheless have the potential to encourage short selling activity.”

Following the announcement of his stepping down as executive chair, WiseTech’s share price saw a notable increase, surging approximately nine percent to $38.57 within the first hour of trading.

Support from New Chair

Incoming independent chair Raelene Murphy expressed her support for White, stating that her personal experience working with him is “totally at odds with media reports.” She described White as an “incredibly hardworking, focused and committed founder” who has successfully built a leading global technology business with substantial potential for continued growth and success.

Previous Controversies and Investigations

This is not the first time Richard White has faced scrutiny. In recent years, an external review into separate claims of misappropriation of funds and allegations of inappropriate relationships with staff did not find him guilty of misconduct. Additionally, in October 2025, officers from the AFP and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) conducted raids on WiseTech’s offices. These raids were reportedly related to allegations that White and three employees had sold over $200 million in company shares during periods when such trading was prohibited.

At the time of the October 2025 raids, WiseTech publicly stated its commitment to fully cooperating with any investigation. The company also noted that no charges had been formally laid against any individual or the company itself in relation to these matters.

Focus on Business Operations

The transition in leadership is intended to allow the company to maintain its focus on its core business operations and strategic objectives. While White steps back from the chairmanship, his continued involvement as an executive director and chief innovation officer signifies his ongoing commitment to WiseTech’s future development and technological advancements. The company aims to navigate the current challenges by reinforcing its operational stability and strategic direction under new leadership, while White addresses the personal allegations outside of his executive chair duties.

Conclusion

Richard White’s decision to step down as executive chairman of WiseTech marks a significant moment for the company, occurring amidst serious allegations and ongoing investigations. His continued role as an executive director and chief innovation officer, alongside Raelene Murphy’s appointment as executive chair, signals an effort to balance corporate governance with operational continuity. The company and White maintain his innocence regarding the allegations, and the focus remains on the future growth and stability of WiseTech’s global technology business.
