First Day in Office: A Swift Start

The new Prime Minister’s day began with a traditional audience at Buckingham Palace with His Majesty the King. Following this, Mr. Burnham addressed the nation from the steps of 10 Downing Street, delivering his inaugural speech as the country’s leader. He then moved quickly to establish his government by naming his Cabinet ministers.

Mr. Burnham, the Member of Parliament for Makerfield, recently returned to Parliament in June after serving as the Mayor of Greater Manchester. His ascent to the premiership followed his formal election as the Leader of the Labour Party on Friday. The transfer of power occurred after Sir Keir Starmer submitted his resignation, paving the way for the King to invite Mr. Burnham to form a new government.

Sir Keir Starmer expressed his support during his resignation address, stating, “I now pass the baton to Andy Burnham. I wish him every success. He has my full support.”

Inaugural Address: Vision for Britain

In his first speech as Prime Minister, delivered outside Downing Street, Mr. Burnham outlined his key priorities. He pledged to offer immediate relief, or “breathing space,” to families struggling with the ongoing cost of living crisis. He also committed to ending the issue of rough sleeping and articulated a vision for the “reindustrialisation of Britain.” Mr. Burnham emphasized the need for “a new political model and a new economic model” for the nation.

Describing the moment as one for “reflection and new resolution,” the new Prime Minister stated, “Britain needs to show the world that we can regain our stability once again.” He acknowledged public sentiment, saying, “I know people at home are fed up with politics. I hear you and I want to be honest with you – we have not been good enough, and we need to be better. We will be.” He further declared his intention to make this period “a circuit breaker for Britain, bringing forward the biggest changes in the last 40 years – a new political model and a new economic model.”

Key Cabinet Appointments

Significant appointments were made to Mr. Burnham’s Cabinet. Sir John Healey was named as the new Chancellor of the Exchequer. In a statement on X, Sir John expressed his honor, saying, “It is the greatest privilege to be appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer by the Prime Minister. Together, we will build a new economy, build new hope and advance the working people of this country. Time to get on with the job.”

The reshuffled Cabinet also saw other notable changes:

  • Ed Miliband, former Labour leader, was appointed Foreign Secretary.
  • Yvette Cooper moved to lead the health portfolio.
  • Bridget Phillipson took on the role of Minister for Women and Equalities, having previously served as Education Secretary.
  • Angela Rayner, former deputy prime minister, was appointed Housing Secretary.
  • Louise Haigh, a close ally of Mr. Burnham, was appointed First Secretary of State and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, tasked with a cross-government troubleshooting role.
  • Wes Streeting, who had been seen as a potential leadership contender before supporting Mr. Burnham, was appointed Defence Secretary.

Several senior figures retained their positions, including Heidi Alexander as Transport Secretary and Shabana Mahmood as Home Secretary. Pat McFadden also continued in his role as Work and Pensions Secretary.

International Engagements

Within his first hours in office, Prime Minister Burnham engaged in international diplomacy. He held a direct conversation with United States President Donald Trump, who subsequently conveyed his best wishes for Mr. Burnham’s success. President Trump commented on Truth Social that the new Prime Minister “has got a big job ahead of him, but he will be able to do it” and assured that the U.S. “will be there to help.”

Further international discussions took place with prominent world leaders, including Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, French President Emmanuel Macron, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. European Council President Antonio Costa offered congratulations via X, noting the positive momentum in EU-UK relations over the past two years and expressing anticipation for continued cooperation.

Conclusion

Andy Burnham’s first day as Prime Minister was marked by a clear agenda, swift governmental appointments, and immediate engagement on the international stage. His administration’s focus appears set on addressing domestic economic challenges while reaffirming the UK’s global relationships.
