A British woman, aged 62, was discovered deceased in her cabin aboard a cruise ship while it was docked in the popular Greek tourist destination of Santorini. The incident occurred on Sunday morning when ship staff entered her stateroom and found her unresponsive.

Investigation into Cruise Passenger’s Death Underway

Following the discovery, emergency services were immediately alerted. The passenger was transferred from the cruise vessel to the port of Athinios. She was then transported to a local hospital, where she was officially pronounced dead. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her passing. An autopsy has been ordered to ascertain the precise cause of death.

Initial reports from local police suggest that foul play is not suspected. Investigators are leaning towards health-related issues as the likely cause of the sudden death, though the exact medical reason remains undetermined pending the autopsy results.

The cruise ship reportedly resumed its scheduled itinerary in the Aegean Sea after the passenger was taken ashore for medical attention. The vessel’s continuation of its journey highlights the standard procedure when a medical emergency or fatality occurs while docked.

Recent Cruise-Related Fatalities in Greek Waters

This unfortunate event follows a series of other incidents involving cruise ship passengers in or near Greek waters in recent weeks. Just last week, a 79-year-old British man was found dead on a cruise ship sailing off the coast of Crete. Ship staff administered first aid after he was found unresponsive on deck, but he was subsequently taken to a hospital where he succumbed.

That incident prompted the cruise vessel to dock at a Greek island. The Chania Port Authority initiated a preliminary investigation and also ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death for the 79-year-old passenger.

Earlier this month, another British man, aged 67, passed away while on board a cruise ship in the port of Corfu, another well-known Greek island. The ship involved in this incident was reportedly flying a Maltese flag.

Broader Context of Cruise Ship Incidents

These recent occurrences in Greece add to a growing awareness of the potential risks and unfortunate events that can happen at sea or during port calls. While passenger deaths on cruises are relatively rare given the vast number of people traveling, they do occur and often prompt thorough investigations.

In a separate incident approximately two months prior, passengers on a 19-day voyage in Asia were informed of the sudden death of their ship’s captain. Captain Michele Bartolomei, 52, who resided in Canada, died due to a medical emergency while his ship, Princess Cruises’ Diamond Princess, was docked in Keelung, Taiwan. Passengers were initially alerted to an emergency situation via a ship-wide announcement calling for medical team response, which preceded the formal notification about the captain’s passing.
