Gina Rinehart Slams ABC Over ‘Violent Torture’ Depiction

Mining magnate Gina Rinehart has strongly condemned the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) for airing a segment that her company described as normalizing violent torture against a woman. The national broadcaster issued an apology after the controversial four-minute clip, which aired in July as part of the program ‘Race Around the World’, contained graphic and disturbing language directed at Rinehart.

Controversial Segment and ABC’s Apology

The segment in question concluded with a voiceover stating: “When the revolution comes, will you hide under the bed or will you know exactly how to shove a stick right up Gina Rinehart’s butthole, stirring it round, mixing her guts up nice and smooth, to make one big sausage roll to make something out of nothing”.

Nearly four weeks after the initial broadcast, ABC Managing Director Hugh Marks issued an apology. “The ABC acknowledges the episode has fallen short of community expectations. The ABC apologises to Mrs Rinehart and to anyone else affected or upset by the publication of the film,” Marks stated. This apology followed a complaint lodged by Hancock Prospecting, Rinehart’s company, which demanded the material be removed and a public retraction be made.

Hancock Prospecting’s Strong Reaction

In response to the ABC’s apology, Hancock Prospecting released a statement detailing its severe disapproval. The company asserted that the content “normalised violent torture against a woman” and “dehumanised an Australian, such that she was worthless and ok to be sexually tortured.” The statement further criticized the internal ABC Ombudsman’s decision, arguing that it “fails all Australian women and the millions of taxpayers who fund the ABC.”

Despite the Ombudsman’s finding that the film did not breach ABC’s editorial policies, the broadcaster acknowledged that the episode did not meet community standards. The Ombudsman’s review focused on whether the offensive remarks were justified within the program’s context. Key factors considered included the show’s format, the filmmaker’s established style, the exaggerated nature of the piece, the absence of visual violence, and criticism from the judging panel. The conclusion was that most viewers would likely not interpret the remarks as a genuine call for, endorsement of, or encouragement of violence.

Filmmaker’s Defense and Context

Kate McGuinness, the filmmaker responsible for the segment, also offered an apology, characterizing the humor in her ‘Race Around the World’ films as absurd and not literal. “In no way was it my intention to promote violence,” McGuinness told the ABC, explaining that her writing is “cartoonish and always satirical.” She added, “Unfortunately, jokes do not land with everyone. Its purpose was never to be taken literally.”

McGuinness created the film, titled ‘A Very Relaxing Video’, in Scotland. It featured a Scottish “forest warrior ninja” and offered satirical tips on how to “make something out of nothing,” presented in a deadpan, voice-over style.

Broader Condemnation and Program Changes

The controversial clip drew widespread condemnation from political figures. Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles described the segment as “completely inappropriate and unacceptable,” expressing surprise that the video remained accessible on the ABC’s platform. He noted that while the ABC had referred the matter to the Ombudsman, its continued availability was concerning.

Sarah Hanson-Young, the Greens communications spokeswoman, also denounced the segment as “disgusting” and called for an apology from the ABC. In response to the backlash and the findings, the film containing the clip has since been removed from the ABC’s platform. It is expected to be replaced by an edited version that omits the offensive material.

Community Expectations and Media Responsibility

The incident highlights the ongoing tension between creative expression and the responsibility of public broadcasters to meet community expectations. While the ABC’s Ombudsman determined no editorial policy breach occurred, the managing director’s apology and the subsequent removal of the content underscore the broadcaster’s recognition of the segment’s impact. The case has sparked debate regarding the interpretation of satire, the potential for offensive content, and the standards expected of a publicly funded media organization.

The controversy serves as a reminder of the scrutiny public broadcasters face, particularly concerning content that could be perceived as harmful or offensive, even when intended as satire. The ABC’s actions, from the initial apology to the program changes, reflect an effort to balance editorial freedom with public accountability and the need to maintain trust with its audience and stakeholders.
