Judd Trump, the reigning Shanghai Masters champion, has called for the integration of advanced technology in professional snooker following a lengthy and disruptive delay during his recent British Open match. The incident, which occurred during his 4-2 victory over Dylan Emery on Monday, saw over 12 minutes elapse as officials attempted to reset the balls after a safety shot went awry. Trump believes this tedious spectacle highlights a need for modernization to enhance the spectator and player experience.

The ‘Boring’ British Open Incident

The disruption took place in the sixth frame of the match, with Trump holding a 3-2 lead. Emery, who had started the frame strongly with consecutive centuries, attempted a safety shot on a cluster of red balls. However, on two separate occasions, his cue ball struck the pink, inadvertently scattering the reds and complicating the table’s setup. This necessitated a lengthy process of repositioning the balls, involving the referee, Proletina Velichkova, and marker, Terry Camilleri, with both players also offering assistance.

The entire procedure extended beyond 12 minutes, a duration Trump found excessively long and, frankly, ‘boring’. He expressed his frustration to reporters, stating, “It was boring. It was way too long. That shouldn’t still be the case in this day and age with all the different technology.” He emphasized that the tedium was palpable not just for the players but also for the audience.

Call for Technological Advancement

Trump pointed to technological solutions already in use in snooker events held in China as a benchmark for improvement. These events often employ an overhead camera system that projects precisely where the balls should be repositioned, significantly streamlining the process. While acknowledging that such technology might be more costly to implement, Trump argued that the investment is justified to prevent repetitive and time-consuming interruptions.

“I think when you’re looking at the screen, it’s so minute, the detail. But I think the technology they use in China, where they’ve got a circle around the ball and it flashes when it’s correct. I have no idea why they don’t use it here,” Trump elaborated. He recalled personal experience using similar systems in Hong Kong, where cameras not only aided ball placement but also automated scoring, further underscoring his belief in the practicality and efficiency of such tools.

Table and Pocket Differences

Beyond the specific incident, Trump also touched upon perceived differences in table conditions between events in China and those in the UK, noting that pockets in China are generally tighter. He suggested that the combination of more responsive cushions and a heavier table surface in some UK venues contributes to pockets that are more forgiving than those encountered internationally.

“The pockets are a lot tighter, but I think that’s partly to do with the cushions being so bouncy and the table heavy,” he explained. “They’re a lot smaller than they are in China, so it’s a lot easier to miss. It makes it a lot better, I think.” He observed that while pockets in China have become slightly smaller in recent seasons, they remain considerably larger than those found on many tables used in UK tournaments, demanding a higher degree of precision from players.

Looking Ahead in the British Open

Trump’s focus now shifts to his upcoming match in the British Open against Ricky Walden. He is vying for his second title of the season, having already secured victory at the Shanghai Masters in August. The 37-year-old also confirmed that his previous cue issues have been resolved, and he is now using the same cue that served him well during the World Championship, expressing confidence in its performance.

The British Open continues, with players like Trump aiming to navigate the challenges of the tournament and contend for the prestigious title. The discussion around technological integration and table conditions, however, remains a pertinent topic for the future development of professional snooker.
