Alan Joyce Recounts Homophobic Attacks as Qantas CEO

Former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce has spoken out about homophobic attacks he experienced during his tenure, particularly in relation to his advocacy for the 2017 marriage equality plebiscite. Joyce detailed instances where he felt singled out by prominent figures and recalled a public pie-throwing incident, which he described as a “homophobic attack” deliberately orchestrated to express outrage over his support for marriage equality.

Advocacy and Backlash

Speaking on The Briefing podcast, Joyce, who is openly gay, recounted how he was one of several CEOs who signed a letter urging the government to legislate marriage equality. However, he felt he was uniquely targeted. He recalled then-Immigration Minister Peter Dutton advising him to “stick to your knitting” after his public support for the ‘Yes’ vote.

The backlash extended beyond political figures. Joyce mentioned former tennis player Margaret Court famously boycotting Qantas due to his stance. He also noted that Virgin CEO Richard Branson publicly supported marriage equality around the same time, prompting Joyce to humorously question if Court intended to boycott all airlines.

Joyce, currently promoting his memoir “Riding the Jet Stream,” also reflected on his decision to move to Australia from Ireland in the 1990s. He cited Ireland’s more conservative social climate, where homosexuality was not decriminalized until 1993, as a significant factor. He shared an anecdote about his early career at Aer Lingus, where his boss remarked it was a “very good Catholic airline,” indicating an environment not conducive to being open about his sexuality.

“I decided after looking at Mardi Gras and how acceptable Australia was that I’d come here for the lifestyle, and it was the best move I ever made,” Joyce stated.

Personal Journey and Public Role

Joyce relocated to Australia in 1996, joining the now-defunct Ansett Australia. It was in Melbourne that he met his husband, Shane Lloyd. He publicly came out in 2010, two years after becoming CEO of Qantas, having already shared his sexuality with family and colleagues.

Reflecting on his experience, Joyce expressed a hope for a future where individuals do not feel the need to “come out.” He described receiving numerous homophobic emails after his public announcement, which distressed his personal assistant. “I said ‘Delete them. Do not look at them,'” he recalled.

Joyce admitted that at the time, he did not wish to be defined as the “gay CEO.” “I just want to be the CEO that happens to be gay,” he explained. “That distinction may not make sense to a lot of people but to me, that was not defining me.”

Navigating Corporate and Social Pressures

Despite his personal reservations about being labeled, Joyce acknowledged the significant positive impact his visibility had. He faced considerable criticism for his campaigning for the ‘Yes’ vote, not only from figures like Dutton and Court but also from within the Qantas board.

“The board started saying ‘Why do you have to lead this Alan? It looks like you’re out there ahead of every other CEO and company’,” Joyce recounted. He emphasized the importance of his advocacy to himself, his husband, and many within Qantas, including customers and shareholders.

“The upside was it’s not too often in your career that you can have an impact and potentially have something as positive as that happening,” he added.

The Impact of Role Models

Joyce recognized that while he didn’t want his identity to be his sole defining characteristic, being perceived as a “gay CEO” offered a valuable role model. “People need to have role models out there,” he stated.

He noted the ongoing challenges, citing that “50 per cent of people in Australia who are gay [are] not coming out at work” and the persistent higher suicide rates within the LGBTQ+ community. Joyce expressed satisfaction that his actions could contribute, even in a small way, by demonstrating that gay individuals can achieve highly and that their sexuality does not limit their potential.

Memoir and Legacy

Following his retirement as Qantas Group CEO in September 2023, after 15 years at the helm, Joyce has focused on writing his memoirs. The book, “Riding the Jet Stream,” covers his personal journey and corporate career, including his final decade at Qantas, which was marked by significant legal challenges such as the “ghost flight” saga, substantial layoffs, and a class-action lawsuit concerning flight cancellations during the 2020-2022 period.
