Professional dancer Amy Dowden, 35, has shared an update on her health journey, reflecting on the physical challenges she has faced following breast cancer treatment. Preparing for her return to the Strictly dance floor, Dowden posted a picture of herself in a bikini on Instagram, expressing gratitude for memories from a recent holiday in Ibiza. Her post prompted questions from followers about her recovery and regaining fitness after undergoing extensive medical treatment.

Navigating Cancer Treatment and Its Aftermath

Amy Dowden was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2023. Her treatment involved a mastectomy, and although she received an all-clear from doctors in February 2024, she continued with monthly chemotherapy sessions to help prevent the cancer from returning. A significant aspect of her treatment included being placed into an early, medically induced menopause. This was a measure to halt the growth of her hormone-fed cancer.

The induced menopause, combined with chemotherapy rounds, has had profound physical effects on Dowden. She has spoken about experiencing broken bones and significant muscle loss as a consequence of these treatments. This has necessitated a dedicated rehabilitation program to regain her strength and mobility.

Rebuilding Strength and Stamina

Responding to a follower’s inquiry about her fitness recovery, Dowden detailed her work with physiotherapists. She emphasized that her rehabilitation plan was bespoke, designed around her surgeries and specific needs. “I needed building strength especially after having broken bones after chemo etc.,” she explained. “I’ve been put into menopause so again building bone strength too to help along with getting my flexibility and stamina back as a dancer.”

Dowden highlighted the importance of a tailored exercise program, working with professionals from @physios2u. “Matt made a brilliant programme and we kept adjusting as when we needed!” she shared, underscoring the adaptive nature of her recovery. She also advised others, “Remember you’re doing amazing and not to put pressure on yourself!”

The Impact of Chemotherapy on Bone Health

The dancer has previously spoken about underestimating the impact chemotherapy had on her bones. Just three days after completing her chemotherapy in November 2023, Dowden broke her foot. Later, while attempting to return to the Strictly dance floor, she suffered a stress fracture, which ultimately led to her early withdrawal from the 2024 series.

Reflecting on this period in an interview on The Dr Hilary Show podcast, Dowden admitted she might have rushed her return. “My body hadn’t fully recovered and healed,” she stated. “I thought it had, because every day when you’re recovering from chemo, you feel stronger and better. And I guess I didn’t realise the full impact chemo has on your bones.” She recounted the sequence of events: breaking her foot shortly after finishing chemo and then experiencing a hairline fracture upon her return to the show.

A Shift in Perspective and Future Plans

Dowden’s journey has also brought about a significant shift in her perspective on life. In a separate Instagram post from her Ibiza trip, she shared a poignant caption reflecting on her health trajectory. “Three years ago today, I had just recently just my breast removed and was currently undergoing fertility treatment before starting chemotherapy… I was terrified, not only of the treatment itself, but of being thrown into a forced menopause because my cancer is hormone-fed,” she wrote.

She contrasted that fear with her current outlook: “Fast forward exactly three years, and my perspective on life has completely changed… I live each day to the fullest, with so much gratitude for the little things I once took for granted. I know how lucky I am, and I never lose sight of that. Every day is a gift, and I’m determined to make the most of it.” Dowden concluded with a message of hope: “Here’s to resilience, hope, and celebrating every milestone.”

Looking Ahead to Strictly Come Dancing

Despite the physical challenges and health setbacks, Amy Dowden is confirmed to return as a professional dancer for the 2026 series of Strictly Come Dancing. The upcoming series is set to undergo significant changes, including a revamped presenting team. Dowden’s resilience and determination to return to the dance floor underscore her strength as she continues her recovery and embraces life post-treatment.
