Cultivating native Australian wildflowers in your garden can be a rewarding experience, but it requires understanding their unique needs, which often differ from non-native species. While visually stunning in their natural habitats, these plants can present challenges for gardeners accustomed to more common varieties. To help ensure success, an expert shares key insights into nurturing these indigenous beauties.

Understanding Native Plant Diversity

Digby Growns, a plant breeder at King’s Park and Botanic Garden, emphasizes that a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work for Australian natives. “It’s horses for courses,” he explains, highlighting that each species has specific requirements. Some native plants are naturally more adaptable to various conditions, making them ideal starting points for novice gardeners. Australia’s vast and varied landscapes, from arid deserts to lush rainforests, have shaped a diverse array of flora, each adapted to its particular environment.

Understanding the origin and natural habitat of a plant is crucial for successful cultivation. For instance, plants native to Western Australia often require exceptionally well-drained, sandy soils. While some species are widespread across the continent, others are endemic to small regions and may struggle when introduced to different climates. This variability means gardeners must research their chosen plants to match their local conditions.

Kangaroo Paws: A Case Study in Adaptability

Kangaroo paws (Anigozanthos) are a prime example of this diversity. Originally found predominantly in the southwestern parts of Australia, their cultivation has been enhanced through breeding. While the wild species, Anigozanthos flavidus, thrives best in its native locale, hybrid cultivars have been developed to tolerate a wider range of conditions. These hybrids offer greater variation in flower colour, size, and height, along with improved resilience to diseases and adaptability to different soil types and climates.

Selecting the Right Native Plants

The amount of time a gardener can dedicate to plant care is a significant factor in selection. Many Australian natives, such as basket grass (Lomandra) and bottlebrushes (Callistemon), are known for their low maintenance requirements. Conversely, some, like native orchids, demand considerable expertise and attention. Choosing plants that align with your available time and gardening skill can prevent frustration and ensure a flourishing garden.

Botanical gardens often feature “bulletproof” native species that are highly recommended for beginners. For gardeners in Perth, for example, Ashby’s banksia (Banksia ashbyi subsp. boreoscaia), grey cottonhead (Conostylis candicans), and the heart-leaf flame pea (Chorizema cordatum) are suggested as robust options.

Special Germination Needs: Smoke and Fire

Some Australian native plants have evolved unique germination triggers, including the need for fire. Flannel flowers, for instance, bloom prolifically after bushfires in the wild. However, replicating this at home doesn’t require actual fires. The seeds of such plants are often recalcitrant, meaning they require specific treatments like smoke water or aerosol smoke to germinate. Kangaroo paws from seed also benefit from similar treatments.

Fortunately, seeds purchased from reputable nurseries are typically pre-treated, simplifying the germination process for home gardeners. Beyond seeds, many native plants can also be propagated from cuttings. Species such as certain star flowers (Calytrix) and small myrtaceous plants like melaleucas are amenable to this method.

Essential Care and Maintenance for Native Gardens

While specific needs vary, several general tips apply to a broad range of native plants. Planting during mild weather seasons is advisable. Even drought-tolerant species benefit from regular watering until they are well-established, as nursery-grown plants are accustomed to more frequent watering. It’s a misconception that all Australian natives are entirely drought-proof; selecting plants suited to your local rainfall patterns is key for a low-water garden.

For gardens featuring a mix of natives with different water needs, supplementary irrigation is essential. Drip irrigation systems are effective, providing two to three deep soakings during warmer months. Pruning is also beneficial for many native species. The best time to prune is typically right after the plant has finished flowering, unless you intend to collect seeds. Aim to remove up to one-third of the plant’s growth, avoiding cuts into bare wood, which can prevent regrowth.

Fertilizing Native Plants

Local native plants, well-suited to your area’s soil and climate, often require minimal fertilization. However, plants sourced from different regions may have distinct nutritional needs. Members of the Proteaceae family, including banksias, grevilleas, and hakeas, are particularly sensitive to phosphorus. These plants efficiently absorb phosphorus from the environment, and standard fertilizers can be toxic. Using a low-phosphorus fertilizer is crucial for this group and can often be used safely for other native plants as well.

For native plants grown in pots, their isolated soil environment necessitates different care. Top-dress containers every six months with a slow-release fertilizer specifically formulated for Australian native plants. When in doubt, local nurseries are invaluable resources for guidance on selecting and caring for native species. While large chain stores may not always have staff with specialized knowledge of natives, independent nurseries are often staffed by experts ready to assist.
