Brandi Glanville Details Court Battle Over Retirement Funds
Reality television personality Brandi Glanville has revealed the significant financial and legal hurdles she faced in retrieving her own retirement savings from her ex-husband, actor Eddie Cibrian, following their 2010 divorce. Glanville shared on her podcast, Brandi Glanville Unfiltered, that the process of reclaiming her 401K required her to hire legal counsel, incurring costs exceeding $10,000 and extending over a year.
Legal Action Necessary for 401K Retrieval
According to Glanville, Cibrian initially resisted relinquishing the funds, making it clear he was unwilling to transfer the 401K assets on paper. “He’s like, get a lawyer – and so I did,” Glanville stated to her co-host, James Maas. The situation necessitated the preparation of a Qualified Domestic Relations Order (QDRO), a legal document essential for dividing retirement assets like 401Ks and pensions between former spouses.
This legal tussle not only impacted Glanville’s financial recovery but also highlights a broader concern for her. She alluded to ongoing personal matters that might also require legal intervention, expressing her dismay at such necessities. “I’m going to have to get a lawyer to fight, which is so ridiculous – I don’t want that for anyone,” she commented.
Advice for Fellow Bravo Stars
Glanville extended advice to other women, particularly those in the public eye and associated with Bravo shows, urging them to secure their financial futures. “That goes back to Housewives, they’re all getting divorced and half of them don’t even have a 401K,” Glanville remarked, emphasizing the importance of financial preparedness. As a mother to two sons with Cibrian, Mason (23) and Jake (19), she stressed the need for women to be aware of their financial standing. “Get your s*** together ladies – know where the money is.”
Background of the Divorce
Cibrian and Glanville’s separation followed an eight-year marriage, reportedly ending after Cibrian’s affair with singer-actress LeAnn Rimes, which came to light during the filming of the 2009 movie Northern Lights. Glanville has previously described the discovery of the affair as devastating, recounting how she learned of the infidelity through public reports and video evidence.
Reflecting on their past, Glanville recalled Cibrian’s attempts to deny the affair despite clear evidence. “There was video footage of them kissing over the table,” Glanville stated. “It was devastating. I went straight home, passed out in my closet, cried and cried.” She also mentioned experiencing prior suspicions of infidelity, noting that Cibrian had dismissed her concerns as jealousy.
Glanville concluded by sharing a poignant memory of their commitment, stating, “Eddie and I were together for 13 years and married for eight. We always promised each other that we would never get a divorce and that we’d love each other when we were old.”
