Disney and Epic Games have introduced a novel integration, linking the physical Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run attraction at Disney parks with a new adventure within the popular video game Fortnite. This initiative marks a significant step in fulfilling the promise of a “persistent, open and interoperable” universe, first announced in February 2024 following Disney’s substantial $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games. While previous collaborations offered standalone Fortnite content, this new experience directly connects park activities with in-game rewards, representing a more cohesive approach to merging digital and physical entertainment.
Bridging the Gap Between Parks and Gaming
The collaboration, titled Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run | Fortnite, allows guests who ride the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida or Disneyland Park in California to earn unlockable rewards within Fortnite. This is the first time an action taken on a physical Disney ride directly translates into a tangible benefit within the Fortnite game world, moving beyond mere thematic similarities.
Julia Humphreys, VP of Production at Disney Digital Entertainment, highlighted the significance of this development. “Smugglers Gambit is definitely a first step and not a finish line,” Humphreys stated. “With this foundational experience we wanted to prove out something that we’ve believed for a long time: that a story doesn’t have to end when you leave the park, and it doesn’t have to start over from zero when you pick up a controller.” The aim is to allow progress, discoveries, and character relationships to carry over between the theme park attraction and the game.
How the Integration Works
Starting August 16, 2026, visitors to Galaxy’s Edge can accept a mission from Hondo via the Disneyland or Disney World’s My Disney Experience app. After riding Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, participants will receive notification—either in the app or via email—that Hondo awaits them in the Fortnite island called Smugglers Gambit with their share of the profits. Linking an Epic Games account to a MyDisney account ensures automatic unlocking of rewards. For those who prefer not to link accounts, a redeemable code will be provided via email. Participation is free with park admission, and Fortnite remains free to play.
Inside Smugglers Gambit
While hands-on experience with Smugglers Gambit is pending, available information and visuals suggest players will step into the role of a smuggler operating in the Outer Rim. The environment art depicts locations like Mersa Veta Station and Ord Ryla, featuring freighters, scrap-metal walkers, and ships in dimly lit hangars. Gameplay is expected to involve quests, combat against pirates and Imperial remnants, and encounters with hostile wildlife, consistent with Disney’s descriptions of the experience. Although the graphical fidelity may not match the physical ride’s output, this is anticipated given the different platforms and rendering technologies involved.
Technological Foundations
The technical backbone of this integration leverages Unreal Engine, a technology that has already been making inroads within Disney parks. Walt Disney Imagineering has been utilizing Unreal Engine for real-time scoring in attractions like Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin and for advanced animatronics, such as the transforming pirate skeleton in Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland. The Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run ride itself was enhanced with a customized, multi-GPU build of Unreal Engine 5, enabling dynamic mission paths based on guest choices.
Smugglers Gambit was developed using Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), a related but distinct toolset built on the same engine. This shared foundation allowed development teams to efficiently translate assets—including ships, characters, and environmental objects—from the physical ride into the Fortnite experience without starting from scratch. Humphreys described the cross-team collaboration as extensive, involving Walt Disney Imagineering, Disney Digital Entertainment, Lucasfilm, and Epic Games, and requiring significant effort in areas like park signage, account linking infrastructure, and the Fortnite ecosystem.
Future Prospects and Potential
This new integration builds upon Disney’s previous use of its Star Wars IP Toolkit, which powered a successful wave of Star Wars content in Fortnite in May 2024, attracting nearly 8 million players in its first 72 hours. While the immediate impact on park attendance from this specific Fortnite tie-in may be modest, the broader implication is the extension of the narrative experience beyond the park gates. The ability for park-goers to carry their in-park experiences into a persistent digital world opens up numerous possibilities for future collaborations.
Humphreys expressed enthusiasm for the long-term potential: “As someone who loves both theme parks and games, this is the start of a collaboration I’ve wanted to see for years,” she said. “It’s very much the opening chapter with Epic Games, and I can’t wait for people to experience where this relationship goes next.”
The success of this initial step could pave the way for similar integrations with other Disney franchises. With the technical infrastructure now in place to connect physical attractions with digital rewards, Disney could potentially link experiences from properties like Toy Story or even Marvel attractions to Fortnite or other digital platforms. The reward structure, offering exclusive outfits for completing the ride, is also seen as an area for future iteration, potentially including more cosmetic items or deeper crossover content as the collaboration evolves.
