Australian actress Magda Szubanski has shared a candid and emotional update on her ongoing battle with Mantle Cell Lymphoma, revealing that she is facing an incurable relapse of the disease. In a recent interview, the beloved comedian disclosed that while she is hoping for more time, her prognosis suggests she may have only a few years left.

Facing an ‘Incurable Relapse’

Szubanski, 65, spoke with Tracy Grimshaw on Sunday’s 60 Minutes, detailing the difficult reality of her current health situation. She described her cancer as an ‘incurable relapse,’ expressing that its return is almost certain. “It’s a question of ‘when’ and then ‘how bad’,” she stated, her voice filled with emotion.

The actress, known for her roles in iconic films like Babe, explained the statistical reality of her diagnosis. “The median survival rate is eight-and-a-half years. So, I could go less, or I could go more,” she shared. This stark figure has profoundly impacted her perspective on life.

A New Awareness of Mortality

Szubanski described living with the constant awareness of her mortality, likening it to having the “sword of Damocles over her head.” She elaborated on this altered state of consciousness, noting that death is no longer an abstract concept for her. “For those of us who, you know, it hangs by only a couple of strands, it’s a very different feeling,” she explained. “It is just a different state of consciousness. It’s a different awareness of death. It’s not abstract.”

She emphasized that she is not trying to present an overly optimistic facade, believing it wouldn’t be authentic. “I’m not being a Pollyanna about this because I think that’s not fair to people to do that,” she said. The experience of undergoing chemotherapy was described as akin to a “multi-car pile-up,” underscoring its grueling nature. Despite the hardship, she acknowledged that it was “doable,” and her current results are favorable, though she understands the situation can change.

The Journey to Diagnosis

Szubanski recounted the period leading up to her diagnosis, during which she experienced a significant decline in her well-being. This unwellness was accompanied by disturbing nightmares that seemed to foreshadow her diagnosis. “I knew something was wrong. I just felt so unwell,” she recalled. “It would wake me up in the middle of the night, literally wake up with a dream voice saying ‘you’re dying, you’re dying’.” This persistent feeling prompted her to seek medical attention, leading to the discovery of the cancer.

Previous Remission and Gratitude

In February, Szubanski had shared the positive news that her cancer had entered remission following chemotherapy. At the time, she expressed relief and gratitude, stating, “I’ve completed chemo and I am now in remission. Phew!” She clarified that remission does not equate to a cure but offers hope for keeping the cancer at bay for an extended period.

She extended heartfelt thanks to her supporters, acknowledging the profound impact their love and encouragement had on her during the challenging health crisis. “So eternal gratitude, thank you so much for that,” she added, noting that the support was beneficial both emotionally and physically.

Praise for the Medical Community

Szubanski also voiced deep appreciation for Australia’s healthcare system and its medical professionals. She referred to it as “one of the best in the world” and expressed daily gratitude for their efforts. “There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t give profound thanks to the medical community… and also to the common sense of the Australian people that we see how practical and compassionate it is to have a really good medical system,” she stated.

Initial Diagnosis and Treatment

The actress first announced her battle with Mantle Cell Lymphoma in May of the previous year via social media. At that time, she appeared with a shaved head, a consequence of her treatment. She described the diagnosis as concerning, noting the lymphoma was “very rare, very aggressive, very serious” and “one of the nasty ones.” However, she also highlighted the strength she drew from her support network, including friends, family, and her medical team, whom she praised as being “the best in the world here in Australia, particularly in Melbourne.”

Szubanski had commenced a treatment regimen known as the Nordic protocol, which involves a multi-phase drug combination aimed at reducing tumor size for Mantle Cell Lymphoma.

Looking Ahead

While the recent update brings a somber outlook, Magda Szubanski continues to face her health challenges with a remarkable degree of openness and resilience. Her willingness to share her journey provides insight into the realities of living with advanced cancer and the emotional and psychological toll it takes, while also highlighting the importance of support systems and quality medical care.
