Jockey Kristy Bennett in Induced Coma After Horrific Fall
The family of Australian jockey Kristy Bennett has shared a somber update regarding her condition following a severe accident during track trials on the Gold Coast. Bennett, 29, remains unconscious and faces a potentially lengthy recovery period that could span several years.
The incident occurred two weeks ago when Bennett’s horse fell during trials. The jockey sustained a brain bleed as a result of the fall, prompting an immediate response from an intensive care ambulance. She has since undergone surgery and is receiving comprehensive medical care at Southport University Hospital.
Family Provides Update on Bennett’s Condition
A recent statement, disseminated by the Australian Jockeys Association on behalf of Bennett’s family, detailed her ongoing health status. “On behalf of Bella and Irene Bennett, we have an update on Kristy Bennett’s condition from her specialists,” the statement read.
“Kristy remains unconscious after suffering traumatic brain injuries and vertebrae fractures. Her rehabilitation could take years to complete. Going forward, we won’t have any updates for some time while the amazing doctors and nurses do their incredible work providing Kristy with the best possible care.”
The family expressed profound gratitude for the outpouring of support. “On behalf of our family and Kristy we want to express our deepest gratitude to everyone in Queensland and Western Australia for their unwavering love.”
Widespread Support for Injured Jockey
Tributes and well wishes have flooded social media platforms from the racing community and beyond. “So sad, love and strength to the Bennetts xo,” one message read, while another offered, “Horrendous injuries – I can only offer my prayers and hope.” A third comment simply stated, “That’s sad news, wishing her all the best xxx.”
Bennett’s Promising Career
Bennett, a popular figure in the racing world, had recently relocated from Western Australia to Queensland. She was riding trackwork for prominent trainer Tony Gollan and had her first Queensland race in May in the outback town of Emerald.
Throughout her career, Bennett has achieved 187 wins from 2,963 starts, along with 652 placings. She commenced her professional jockey career in 2018, with her inaugural victory aboard the horse Chinetti, trained by Paul Jordan.
