Laura Loomer Reverses Ukraine Stance After Kyiv Visit
SHARE

Right-wing influencer Laura Loomer has publicly reversed her long-held skepticism regarding Ukraine’s defense against Russia, following a recent visit to Kyiv. The shift in her public stance comes as she conducted an interview with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during which he reportedly indicated a potential meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington next week. This development occurs amid ongoing legislative efforts in the U.S. Congress concerning sanctions against Russia.

A Stark Encounter in Kyiv

Loomer, known for her substantial online following and previous downplaying of Russia’s invasion, experienced an air raid siren firsthand during her time in Ukraine’s capital. This event appeared to profoundly impact her perspective. “Just experienced my first air raid in Ukraine. Sirens blaring. This is every day for every Ukrainian,” Loomer stated on the social media platform X. Reflecting on her past statements, she admitted, “I often said I don’t care. Looking back, that wasn’t very nice of me to say. We need to have moral clarity.”

During her visit, Loomer conducted a one-on-one interview with President Zelenskyy in the garden of the presidential palace. She shared images and video clips from the meeting, including a segment where she questioned Zelenskyy about his past interactions with Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance. Zelenskyy, in the clip, suggested that his relationship with the U.S. president had seen significant improvement, describing a brief conversation in the Vatican in April 2025 as a “historic moment” that altered their dynamic in a short period.

Donald Trump reportedly praised Loomer’s interview, calling it “Very good!!!!” on Truth Social. Some observers in Kyiv interpreted Trump’s endorsement as a sign of a potential shift in his administration’s previously critical view of Ukraine, particularly as Ukrainian forces have been conducting long-range drone strikes within Russia.

Shifting Narratives on Russian Aggression

Loomer’s public statements now advocate for strong U.S. sanctions against Russia, highlighting the Kremlin’s alliance with Iran. She asserted, “Russia is funding Iran and providing them with explosives to murder US soldiers as Iran has called for President Trump’s assassination.” Loomer argued for a firm economic stance, stating, “The United States needs to break Russia’s economy until they submit to peace.”

This position marks a significant departure from Loomer’s previous public commentary. For years, she had been a vocal critic of U.S. aid to Ukraine, characterizing the nation as “a country full of Nazi apologists” and asserting it was “led by a Jihadi apologist.” These characterizations echoed justifications used by Russia for its full-scale invasion in 2022. Her skepticism about Ukraine’s situation was shared by other prominent conservative figures, including former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, and became a point of division within the Republican party, contrasting traditional stances with those aligned with the Trump-era “MAGA” movement.

Anton Gerashchenko, a commentator and former advisor to the Ukrainian government, viewed Loomer’s meeting with Zelenskyy as “important and necessary.” He suggested it signifies “a public break with Russian narratives and propaganda by part of the Maga movement” and indicates “a shift in rhetoric regarding Russian aggression.” Zelenskyy’s office also commented on Loomer’s visit, stating, “It is really important that @LauraLoomer is in Ukraine and sees things with her own eyes as they are.” They added that it “takes courage to come to Ukraine and not be deterred by Russian propaganda or air raid sirens. Thank you, Laura.”

A Tour of Resilience and Faith

Beyond her political engagements, Loomer visited several significant sites in Kyiv. She toured the Dormition Cathedral of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a major religious landmark that has previously been targeted by Russian attacks. In a video recorded inside the church, she criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin’s portrayal of Russia as a pro-Christian nation, especially in light of the ongoing conflict. “I just don’t think that you should be allowed to say that you’re protecting Christianity if you’re trying to drone strike Jesus Christ,” Loomer remarked.

Loomer also met with Ukraine’s chief rabbi, Moshe Reuven Azman. As part of her visit, she toured a branch of McDonald’s in Kyiv’s Lukianivka district that had been repeatedly hit by Russian missiles. Demonstratively sitting at an outdoor table in front of the damaged building, Loomer ordered a cheeseburger. Rabbi Azman later shared his experience of hosting Loomer, noting her influence on the U.S. audience and her ties to Donald Trump. He stated that their conversation was “candid” and that he conveyed “the truth about this terrible war – about the daily Russian shelling, the children and civilians killed, the destroyed cities and villages, and the pain that Ukrainian families endure every day.”

The visit and subsequent public statements by Laura Loomer highlight a potential evolution in perspectives among certain segments of the American conservative movement regarding the conflict in Ukraine. The ongoing Russian attacks, including a ballistic missile strike on the Kyiv region that killed six people and injured dozens, and an air bomb attack in Sloviansk that killed five, underscore the continued severity of the war.

Conclusion

Laura Loomer’s journey to Ukraine and her subsequent public statements represent a notable shift in her long-standing public commentary on the war. Her direct experience with the realities of the conflict, including air raids and visits to damaged sites, appears to have led to a reevaluation of her previously expressed views. The potential for a meeting between President Zelenskyy and Donald Trump, as relayed by Loomer, adds another layer of significance to her visit, suggesting possible shifts in U.S. political discourse surrounding the ongoing conflict.
