Scottie Scheffler’s Caddie: A Lucrative Partnership
SHARE

As Scottie Scheffler prepares to compete in The Open, aiming to become the first golfer since Padraig Harrington in 2008 to successfully defend the title, attention also turns to his long-time caddie, Ted Scott. Scheffler, the current world No. 1, enters the final major of the year as a favorite, despite close calls at the Masters and U.S. Open earlier in the season. A victory would not only solidify his place in golf history but also significantly benefit his trusted bagman.

The Open Championship: A Record-Breaking Prize Fund

This year’s Open Championship boasts a record-breaking prize fund, with The R&A increasing the total purse to $17.75 million (£13.3 million). The champion golfer will receive a substantial $3.2 million (£2.4 million), along with the coveted Claret Jug. This lucrative prize pool is a significant factor for players and their caddies alike.

Ted Scott’s Earnings: A Generous Share

Ted Scott, who has been caddying for Scheffler since 2021, stands to earn a considerable sum if Scheffler secures the victory. While the exact details of their financial arrangement remain private, it is customary for caddies to receive approximately 10 percent of a winner’s prize money. For a $3.2 million first-place prize, this would translate to a remarkable $320,000 (£240,000) for Scott. Many caddies also receive a fixed salary and smaller percentages for lower finishes.

Scott’s partnership with Scheffler began after a successful tenure with two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson. His consistent presence on the bag has coincided with a period of immense success for Scheffler.

Scheffler’s Financial Philosophy: Detached and Delegated

Interestingly, Scottie Scheffler himself has admitted to having a rather detached view of the financial aspects of his career, particularly concerning his caddie’s compensation. In a 2024 appearance on the “Pardon My Take” podcast, Scheffler described his approach:

“It’s been a fun year. I don’t really think about the money that much. At the end of the day, I’m just playing golf and the money is just a gift on top of that.”

He further elaborated on how these matters are handled:

“We have a girl that helps us pay bills because I’m basically a child and can’t keep track of that stuff. She quickly took over that job and texts me at the end of each week saying, ‘Hey, this is how much we’re paying Ted.’ I’m like, ‘That’s great.'”

This candid admission highlights Scheffler’s focus on the game itself, entrusting financial administration to others. His self-deprecating remark about being a “child” in managing finances underscores his delegation of responsibilities.

A Career of Unprecedented Earnings

Scottie Scheffler has amassed an extraordinary amount of prize money throughout his professional golf career. According to PGA Tour records, he has earned over $114 million (£85 million) in official prize money, placing him third on the all-time list, trailing only Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. A significant portion of these earnings, approximately $105 million (£78 million), has been accumulated since Ted Scott began caddying for him in late 2021.

Scheffler has consistently led the PGA Tour’s earnings table in each of the four seasons since Scott joined him. This sustained success means that Ted Scott’s share of the prize money alone has likely reached several million dollars over their partnership, potentially surpassing the total career earnings of many of Scheffler’s competitors.

The Caddie’s Role: More Than Just Carrying Clubs

The financial success of Ted Scott illustrates the vital role a caddie plays in professional golf. Beyond physically carrying the clubs, a caddie provides crucial strategic advice, reads greens, assesses wind conditions, and offers invaluable moral support. Their expertise and experience can significantly influence a player’s performance, making their contribution a key factor in achieving victory and, consequently, their own financial rewards.

Scheffler’s arrangement with Scott, though seemingly simple in its delegation, reflects a deep trust and a successful working relationship. The substantial earnings underscore the high stakes and immense financial rewards present in modern professional golf, particularly for those at the pinnacle of the sport.

Looking Ahead

As the focus remains on Scheffler’s quest to defend The Open title, the symbiotic relationship between him and Ted Scott serves as a compelling subplot. Their financial arrangement, characterized by Scheffler’s unique approach to money management, highlights the significant financial ecosystem that surrounds elite golf and the substantial rewards available to those who contribute to a champion’s success.
