Spying allegations against Southampton could delay resolution until Tuesday, raising uncertainty over the Championship play-off final scheduled for next week. The EFL charged the Saints last week for allegedly spying on Middlesbrough’s training session ahead of their semi-final clash. Officials requested an independent commission to review the case urgently.
Hearing Set for May 19 at Latest
The EFL announced Thursday that the independent disciplinary commission hearing will occur on or before Tuesday, May 19. The league emphasized it plans for the final to proceed as scheduled on Saturday, May 23, at 4:30 p.m. However, due to the independent nature of the process, the EFL lacks control over the exact timetable, which remains under discussion.
Supporters of Southampton and Hull City have been cautioned that the disciplinary outcome might alter the fixture’s date, time, or venue. Contingency plans account for potential appeals.
Potential Severe Punishment for Southampton
Southampton risks expulsion from the play-offs and forfeiture of Premier League promotion if the commission upholds the spying charge. Middlesbrough lodged a complaint after spotting a Saints staff member observing and filming their training session. The individual was captured on camera and identified.
Middlesbrough prepares as a potential replacement in the final against Hull City and continues training accordingly.
Venue Challenges if Final Shifts
Relocating the final beyond the original date poses issues at Wembley Stadium, booked for rugby league Challenge Cup finals on May 30 and 31, followed by the Women’s FA Cup final and Harry Styles concerts from June 12 to July 4. An alternative venue might be necessary, though ticket sales for Southampton and Hull begin today, allocating 35,984 tickets each.
Full EFL Statement
The EFL stated: “The Independent Disciplinary Commission hearing will take place on or before Tuesday, 19 May. The exact date remains under discussion and is expected to be confirmed shortly. The Commission will issue its decision as soon as possible following consideration of the relevant submissions and evidence. As the proceedings are being conducted by an Independent Disciplinary Commission, the EFL does not control the proposed timetable. Notwithstanding this, the EFL continues to plan on the basis that the Championship play-off final will take place as scheduled on Saturday May 23, with the kick-off time confirmed as 4.30pm. Supporters should, however, be aware that the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings may yet result in changes to the fixture. The EFL has a number of contingency plans should they be required, which also includes consideration of any appeal process, if required.”
