President Trump late Friday addressed a video posted to his social media account that included a racist depiction of Barack and Michelle Obama as apes, telling reporters he regarded at first of the now-deleted video however did not see the half that confirmed the previous president and first girl. 

“I simply regarded on the first half,” the president mentioned on Air Pressure One, noting that a lot of the video was about alleged voter fraud. “I did not see the entire thing. He urged that he gave the video to a staffer, saying “any person slipped” and posted it to his Reality Social account shortly earlier than midnight on Thursday with out recognizing the depiction of the Obamas in the previous couple of seconds.

The White Home initially defended the social media put up on Friday. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt known as criticism of the video “faux outrage,” and mentioned the picture of the Obamas’ faces edited onto the our bodies of apes was a part of a meme that depicted Democrats as characters from the Lion King. 

However a litany of Republican lawmakers shortly condemned the put up and urged Mr. Trump to take it down, with Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina calling it “essentially the most racist factor I’ve seen out of this White Home.” A number of Republicans additionally pushed the White Home to apologize.

Mr. Trump instructed reporters he spoke with Scott, the Senate’s sole Black Republican, confirming earlier reporting from CBS Information. The put up was deleted from Reality Social quickly after their dialog.

Requested if he intends to apologize for the put up, Mr. Trump responded: “No, I did not make a mistake.” However he mentioned he “after all” condemns the racist portion of the video.
