An Australian man, identified as 39-year-old Cameron Hughes from Sydney, has died while in immigration detention in Bali, Indonesia. Mr. Hughes passed away on Friday evening while being transported to the hospital after being found unresponsive in his detention cell at the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office. He had been held for overstaying his visa by nearly 100 days.
Circumstances of Death
According to a spokesperson for the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, immigration officers observed Mr. Hughes remaining motionless for an extended period via CCTV surveillance. Responding immediately, officers discovered him unconscious. They initiated first aid, including oxygen support, and arranged for an ambulance to transport him to the nearest hospital. Despite emergency treatment en route, Mr. Hughes was pronounced dead before reaching Bali Jimbaran General Hospital. A preliminary assessment by the hospital suggested a suspected heart attack as a potential contributing factor.
Visa Overstay and Detainment
Mr. Hughes had reportedly overstayed his Indonesian visa by 98 days. His detainment followed a public complaint received in March concerning the alleged misuse of a stay permit. Mr. Hughes, who resided in Jimbaran, South Kuta, was reportedly given opportunities to rectify his immigration status but did not comply, leading to his apprehension and placement in detention. He was reportedly scheduled for deportation just hours after his death.
Official Response and Investigation
Bugie Kurniawan, the Head of the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, extended his sincere condolences to Mr. Hughes’ family. The Indonesian National Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. The incident highlights the potential risks and outcomes associated with visa overstays and immigration detention.
