Istanbul Airport has claimed the title of Europe’s busiest airport for the fourth consecutive year in 2025, handling 84 million passengers amid a surge in air travel.

Europe recorded 11.2 million flights last year, a 4% increase from 2024, with most countries showing growth. Istanbul Airport averaged 1,490 daily arrivals and departures, solidifying its lead.

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport took second place with 1,351 daily flights, followed by London Heathrow in third at 1,315. Paris Charles de Gaulle ranked fourth with 1,314 daily movements, while Frankfurt Airport rounded out the top five at 1,261.

“2025 presented a paradox for European air travel. Recovery toward pre-pandemic levels occurred alongside fewer cancellations, yet delays affected nearly a quarter of flights,” stated Ivaylo Danailov, CEO of flight compensation firm SkyRefund, which analyzed the data.

“Passengers now face higher chances of delays qualifying for compensation under EU261/UK261 rules—up to €600 (£522) for a three-hour delay, regardless of the cause.”

  • 10. Palma de Mallorca

Airports in Turkey, Spain, and Italy posted strong gains, fueled by leisure demand. Mediterranean hubs like Istanbul, Barcelona, and Palma de Mallorca saw significant rises as vacation travel rebounded.

Travel patterns have evolved since 2019, with airlines boosting domestic and short-haul routes while long-haul services recover steadily.
