A highly anticipated, large-scale role-playing game set in the beloved Avatar: The Last Airbender universe has been halted and is no longer in active development. This news marks another setback for video game adaptations within the popular franchise.
Project Cancellation Confirmed
Sources confirm that the ambitious AAA Avatar RPG has been shelved. Shawn Kittelsen, a senior executive overseeing creative and production at Paramount Games Studio, stated that the project was not in production at the time of the studio’s formation. This studio consolidation followed the significant merger of Paramount and Skydance’s gaming divisions.
Kittelsen clarified that while the specific RPG is no longer moving forward, this does not entirely preclude the possibility of a future AAA Avatar game. However, he indicated that any new title might take a different form.
Past Ambitions and Future Outlook
Announced in late 2024, the canceled RPG was promoted as the franchise’s most expansive video game to date. Paramount had described it as featuring an entirely new, never-before-seen Avatar. The game was reportedly set thousands of years prior to the events of the original Avatar: The Last Airbender series, exploring a different era within the established universe.
The cancellation comes amidst a history of mixed receptions for Avatar video game releases. Despite this, another title, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game, is generating significant fan interest. This 1v1 2D fighting game, which experienced a release date delay from July 2 to July 23, has been building anticipation with the reveal of characters like Azula and Kyoshi.
