Hrgovic Claims He Knew Itauma Would Tire in Heavyweight Title Fight

Filip Hrgovic has asserted that he anticipated Moses Itauma would exhaust himself during their recent world heavyweight title bout, a fight that saw the Croatian emerge victorious. Itauma, who entered the contest at the O2 Arena as the significant favorite, was aiming to make history as the second-youngest heavyweight world champion, a feat previously achieved only by Mike Tyson. The 21-year-old British boxer had an unblemished record of 14 wins heading into the championship match and initially appeared on track for a dominant victory, even managing to knock down Hrgovic in the second round. He continued to control the pace of the fight for several rounds.

Hrgovic’s Resilience and Tactical Victory

Despite an early setback, Hrgovic demonstrated considerable resilience, weathering Itauma’s initial onslaught. By the conclusion of the eighth round, it became apparent that the British challenger was experiencing significant fatigue. Hrgovic capitalized on this shift in momentum, pressing his advantage in the ninth round. He cornered a visibly struggling Itauma, prompting his corner to throw in the towel, thereby ending the contest and securing the heavyweight world championship for Croatia, marking a historic first for the nation in the division.

Following the fight, Hrgovic stated his belief that he recognized Itauma’s tendency to tire early in the bout. He explained that even while seemingly losing the early rounds, he was confident in his ability to exploit his opponent’s conditioning in the later stages. “From the first round, I saw him gassing out. He started fast. I knew he was going to gas out,” Hrgovic remarked. “I knew when my chance came, I needed to push. That is what I did.”

Post-Fight Reflections and Future Outlook

Hrgovic also addressed Itauma directly, questioning the importance of a fighter’s chin and suggesting that Itauma’s performance indicated a potential weakness. “You’re going to be sending Moses back to high school. Let me ask my young friend something. Is chin important? Is chin important?” Hrgovic said. “He didn’t seem to think so, but I think he may have answered that question. Look, chin is important.”

Despite the defeat, Hrgovic was complimentary of Itauma, acknowledging his talent and potential. “He’s an amazing fighter. I want to thank him for accepting this fight, to give me a chance to become a new superstar in the heavyweight division,” Hrgovic stated. “I’m the present, and he’s definitely the future. He’s an amazing fighter. He’s one of a kind. He’s the best I’ve been in the ring with, but he needs more experience.”

Support for the Beaten Challenger

Moses Itauma was taken from the ring on a stretcher and transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation following the stoppage. Despite the setback, prominent figures within the boxing community have expressed confidence in his ability to recover and achieve future success. Tony Bellew, a former world champion, took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to voice his support.

“Filip done amazing to ride through the storm! I’ll say this now! Moses Itauma will be world champion! He will learn so much from tonight,” Bellew wrote. He further elaborated on Itauma’s performance, noting, “The biggest thing I’ll take from tonight is just how brave and tough Moses was. We knew Filip was super tough. Tonight we learned Moses is also tough. Once he learns to pace a 12 round bout he’s gonna rule for a while!”

Another boxer, Eubank Jr., also commented on the fight, expressing surprise at the turn of events. “Not sure what happened tonight. Moses was fighting well & then gassed out it seems… at his young age this should simply not be happening,” he posted. “Time to rethink his training camp moving forward I think. Congratulations to Filip Hrgović becoming the new heavyweight champ.” Eubank Jr. also added a note about Hrgovic’s resilience, stating, “Filip Hrgovic’s chin needs to studied…”

Lessons Learned and Future Prospects

The fight highlighted a common narrative in boxing: the importance of stamina and pacing over raw power and early dominance, especially in championship-level contests. While Itauma showcased impressive power and early aggression, his inability to maintain that intensity for the full duration of the fight ultimately proved to be his undoing. Hrgovic, conversely, demonstrated the value of experience and strategic patience, waiting for his opportunity to strike when his opponent began to fade.

Itauma’s first professional defeat marks a significant learning experience for the young fighter. The widespread belief among analysts and fellow boxers is that with adjustments to his training and fight strategy, he possesses the fundamental skills and toughness to still reach the pinnacle of the heavyweight division. His youth remains a significant asset, providing ample time to refine his approach and build the necessary endurance for prolonged, high-stakes bouts.

Hrgovic’s victory not only earns him a world title but also elevates his standing in the heavyweight landscape. His performance suggests he is a formidable force capable of overcoming challenges and capitalizing on opponents’ weaknesses. The dynamic between the established champion and the rising contender sets the stage for potential future rematches and continued intrigue in the heavyweight division.
